batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2013 Author Posted August 10, 2013 Let's see ... The Mets at $700.00 (sleeping bag not included) or a Breaking Bad all nighter for free?Mets fans invited to sleepover in outfield tonight while team plays in ArizonaYou know its been a tough season when a baseball team invites its fans to a 15-hour party at the ballpark and the players are 2,400 miles away. But thats whats happening at Citi Field tonight, when the Mets host the first ever Citi Field Sleepover. For $200, each fan gets the chance to sleep in the outfield, enjoy dinner, a late night snack and breakfast, and watch the Mets-Diamondbacks game being played at the D-backs Chase Field in Phoenix broadcast on the jumbo screen. The event, which also includes a ticket to the Mets-Brewers game Sept. 28 at Citi Field, is one of many special promotions the Mets organization is hosting this season."Its a different, unique experience for fans. A lot of them have never been on the field," Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said. The team is capping the event at 500, and have sold more than 350 tickets."Youre not looking to make money, youre hoping you build, get more next year, more the third year," he said. "You try different things and see how it plays out."The Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers are among the Major League teams that have hosted similar overnight events, and many minor league teams have done them, too. Theyre very popular in Camden, where the Riversharks usually sell out the 800 spots to each of the four overnights, group manager Kim Perno said. But the Riversharks host their sleepovers when the team is playing at home. And the tickets are $25."We really try to incorporate the game," Perno said, adding that this seasons final sleepover is next Friday. The Riversharks package includes a 200-level ticket, dinner, post-game fireworks show, a movie, breakfast and a 90-minute baseball clinic on the field the next morning.Thats the big draw, Perno said. "A few Rivershark players assist in that, so the fans are getting one on one time with Rivershark players."The Mets have held many special events from Star Wars night, when hundreds of Obi-Wan Kenobis and Darth Vaders paraded on the field to post-game concerts featuring Foreigner, Nas and O.A.R."We get a four to five thousand bump when we do these concerts," Horwitz said. The final is Aug. 23 with Third Eye Blind.Going into last nights game, the Mets are 52-60 and 16 1/2 games back in the National League East. Average attendance at the 45,000-seat Citi Field in Queens hovers around 27,000-28,000, Horwitz said. A boost of 20 percent for a post-game concert is a good return, said Laurence McCarthy, a business professor from Seton Hall University who teaches sports marketing."Theres food and drink and parking at least, and if you have children along, look at Disney when they come to town and how much they make on concessions," he said. Some promotions including tonights sleepover are intended to deepen the teams relationship with current fans. The concert promotions are meant to bring new faces to the park."Its not a baseball crowd thats coming, theyre not there for the game," McCarthy said. "But the hope is having come, theyll have a great time, theyll consider coming back."The cross-town rival Yankees havent jumped on the bandwagon, even during this season, when many of the star players have been hurt and the teams break-even record has them in fourth place."If people are knocking down the walls to get in, you dont have to do these promotions," McCarthy said.http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2013/08/fans_outfield_sleepover_citi_field_mets.html

And the lead is a smack for no reason. Sounds like a fun event. Good for the Mets.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Jay Horwitz:"Youre not looking to make money, youre hoping you build, get more next year, more the third year," he said. Then why not make it more affordable? Sheesh.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 It's not about making money eh?, I bet they would have sold all the tickets if they were $100 a pop and not $200, that would build up some goodwill maybe.I would have gone but it's too expensive.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 What actually happened at the Citi Field Sleepover? FAFIF had a special correspondent on the ground (literally) and he filed a really wonderful report. After the game, and after a trip to Mos Zone for midnight snacks, the second half of the double feature began. Although we were shown Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, there were neither clouds nor meatballs in the New York night sky. Only stars.Thats when it became surreal.Lying down in the Citi Field grass, under a starlit sky in the heart of Queens, I realized how ridiculous the whole night was. Four hundred people left the comfort of their homes and their beds for a night to sleep on cold, hard ground. But not just any cold, hard ground. The Mets cold, hard ground. The same cold, hard ground where Johan Santana threw his no-hitter; where to the possible dismay of Mr. Kranepool David Wright set a new all-time Met hit record; where Matt Harvey continues to contend for the Cy Young; and where the Mets will, fingers crossed, someday win a World Series. And for the next 50 years or however long Citi Field sticks around I can point from my seats at the ballpark or at the screen at a friends house and say that I slept right there, right behind second base, close enough to touch the infield dirt (if the waiver had let me). When the movie was over, both scoreboards played a looping animation of a cartoon sheep jumping over a fence with an eerily superimposed Mr. Met head over where the sheeps head should have been. Written above it was, Get some sleep/Count some sheep. This mildly unsettling animation, coupled with fathers and sons still playing catch in the outfield, made counting sheep a bit difficult let alone getting sleep. But I didnt want to get sleep anyway.
