Because the school mascot was a student dressed as an American Indian with makeup and orange-y skin, they became the 'Orangemen'.

In Northern Ireland and Scotland, Orangemen are a group of loyalist Protestants known for their discrimination against Irish Catholics and nationalists, and thus would be offensive to they typical attendee on an Irish Heritage Night. That was the joke. Now it is explained. Now it's not funny. Perhaps it never was.

He just wears it because he is Protestant, not because he is a radical. He's an Irishman to the core
