Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 Lost in the sweep was a pretty rare accomplishment by the Yankees --- against the Mets or anybody. IN the Mets 9-4 win on Wednesday, Ivan Nova pitched only the fiftieth immaculate inning --- striking out the side on nine pitches --- on record in MLB history. (I imagine some are out there that have been lost to time.)The Mets have pulled the feat off twice. Nobody is known to have ever struck out four batters in an inning on 12 pitches.Three guys have pulled it off twice, and they're pretty much the first three guys you'd probably guess.PitcherDateTeamOpposing teamInningBatters facedJohn ClarksonJune 4, 1889Boston BeaneatersPhiladelphia Quakers3rdJim Fogarty,Sam Thompson,Sid FarrarRube Waddell1-Jul-02Philadelphia AthleticsBaltimore Orioles3rdBilly Gilbert,Harry Howell,John CroninPat Ragan5-Oct-14Brooklyn DodgersBoston Braves8thPossum Whitted,Butch Schmidt,Red SmithJoe Oeschger8-Sep-21Boston BravesPhiladelphia Phillies4thBevo LeBourveau,Cy Williams,Ed KonetchySloppy Thurston22-Aug-23Chicago White SoxPhiladelphia Athletics12thBeauty McGowan,Chick Galloway,Sammy HaleDazzy Vance24-Sep-24Brooklyn DodgersChicago Cubs2ndSam Bohne,Bubbles Hargrave,Eppa RixeyLefty Grove23-Aug-28Philadelphia AthleticsCleveland Indians2ndEddie Morgan,Luther Harvel,Martin AutryLefty Grove(2)27-Sep-28Philadelphia AthleticsChicago White Sox7thMoe Berg,Tommy Thomas,Johnny MostilBilly Hoeft7-Sep-53Detroit TigersChicago White Sox7thJim Rivera,Mike Fornieles,Chico CarrasquelJim Bunning2-Aug-59Detroit TigersBoston Red Sox9thSammy White,Jim Mahoney,Ike DelockSandy Koufax30-Jun-62Los Angeles DodgersNew York Mets1stRichie Ashburn,Rod Kanehl,Flix MantillaSandy Koufax(2)18-Apr-64Los Angeles DodgersCincinnati Reds3rdLeo Crdenas,Johnny Edwards,Jim MaloneyBob Bruce19-Apr-64Houston Colt .45sSt Louis Cardinals8thBill White,Charlie James,Ken BoyerAl Downing11-Aug-67New York YankeesCleveland Indians2ndTony Horton,Don Demeter,Duke SimsNolan Ryan19-Apr-68New York MetsLos Angeles Dodgers3rdClaude Osteen,Wes Parker,Zoilo VersallesBob Gibson12-May-69St. Louis CardinalsLos Angeles Dodgers7thLen Gabrielson,Paul Popovich,John MillerMilt Pappas24-Sep-71Chicago CubsPhiladelphia Phillies4thGreg Luzinski,Don Money,Mike AndersonNolan Ryan(2)9-Jul-72California AngelsBoston Red Sox2ndCarlton Fisk,Bob Burda,Juan BenquezBruce Sutter8-Sep-77Chicago CubsMontreal Expos9thEllis Valentine,Gary Carter,Larry ParrishRon Guidry7-Aug-84New York YankeesChicago White Sox9thCarlton Fisk(2),Tom Paciorek,Greg Luzinski(2)Danny Jackson24-Oct-85Kansas City RoyalsSt. Louis Cardinals7thTerry Pendleton,Tom Nieto,Brian HarperJeff Robinson7-Sep-87Pittsburgh PiratesChicago Cubs8thLeon Durham,Andre Dawson,Rafael PalmeiroRob Dibble4-Jun-89Cincinnati RedsSan Diego Padres8thCarmelo Martnez,Mark Parent,Garry TempletonJeff Montgomery29-Apr-90Kansas City RoyalsTexas Rangers8thPete Incaviglia,Geno Petralli,Thad BosleyAndy Ashby15-Jun-91Philadelphia PhilliesCincinnati Reds4thHal Morris,Todd Benzinger,Jeff ReedDavid Cone30-Aug-91New York MetsCincinnati Reds5thHerm Winningham,Randy Myers,Mariano DuncanPete Harnisch6-Sep-91Houston AstrosPhiladelphia Phillies7thWes Chamberlain,Dickie Thon,Jose De JesusTrevor Wilson7-Jun-92San Francisco GiantsHouston Astros9thJeff Bagwell,Eric Anthony,Rafael RamrezMel Rojas11-May-94Montreal ExposNew York Mets9thDavid Segui,Todd Hundley,Jeff McKnightMike Magnante22-Aug-97Houston AstrosColorado Rockies9thEllis Burks,Harvey Pulliam,Jeff Reed(2)Randy Johnson23-Aug-01Arizona DiamondbacksPittsburgh Pirates6thTony McKnight,Gary Matthews, Jr.,Jack WilsonJason Isringhausen13-Apr-02St. Louis CardinalsHouston Astros9thDaryle Ward,Jos Vizcano,Julio LugoByung-Hyun Kim11-May-02Arizona DiamondbacksPhiladelphia Phillies8thScott Rolen,Mike Lieberthal,Pat BurrellPedro Martnez18-May-02Boston Red SoxSeattle Mariners1stIchiro Suzuki,Mark McLemore,Rubn SierraBrian Lawrence12-Jun-02San Diego PadresBaltimore Orioles3rdBrook Fordyce,Jerry Hairston, Jr.,Melvin MoraBrandon Backe15-Apr-04Houston AstrosMilwaukee Brewers8thBill Hall,Scott Podsednik,Craig CounsellBen Sheets13-Jun-04Milwaukee BrewersHouston Astros3rdPete Munro,Craig Biggio,Jos Vizcano(2)LaTroy Hawkins11-Sep-04Chicago CubsFlorida Marlins9thJeff Conine,Juan Encarnacin,lex GonzlezRick Helling20-Jun-06Milwaukee BrewersDetroit Tigers1stCurtis Granderson,Plcido Polanco,Ivn RodrguezBuddy Carlyle6-Jul-07Atlanta BravesSan Diego Padres4thKhalil Greene,Russell Branyan,Jos Cruz, Jr.Rich Harden8-Jun-08Oakland AthleticsLos Angeles Angels1stMaicer Izturis,Howie Kendrick,Garret AndersonFlix Hernndez17-Jun-08Seattle MarinersFlorida Marlins4thJeremy Hermida,Jorge Cant,Mike JacobsA. Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 Confused...You said it's only happened five times, yet you list far more occurrences than that.

Of course, it may just be that swinging and missing is more frequent now than it's ever been.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 31, 2013 Author Posted May 31, 2013 Certainly true, and the prevalence of relievers who fire it up for one inning getting ridiculous K/9 numbers like 12.5.Starters too! Check out Ollie Perez! All latter-day guys, if not all latter-day saints.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 and Nova earned a demotion for it too.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 Yeah, but Ike and Tejada were in there. That's gotta get an asterisk.

Check out Ollie Perez! All latter-day guys, if not all latter-day saints.Dwight Gooden set the all-time K/9 inning record in his rookie season of 1984 (11.3945), breaking Sam McDowell's 1965 record. Today, Gooden's '84 mark isn't even in the top 10 and McDowell's '65 K/9 rate ranks 25th all-time.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 31, 2013 Author Posted May 31, 2013 It's like Gooden changed the game in a way Ryan somehow never did. Once people started waving those K placards, it changed everyone's values.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Buck going for the immaculate ball game: 9 pitches, 3 Ks
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 1, 2013 Author Posted June 1, 2013 Yeah, he's become the righthanded Ike. Pitch him away and let him get himself out.
