Niese will be the third opening day starter in Terry Collins' thus-far three-season tenure, none of those starters being the actual ace during his tenancy, R.A. Dickey.

Longest streak without a repeating opening day starter belongs to the the Torre-Bambi-Johnson bridge.

1980: Swan (his second of two)
1981: Zachry
1982: Jones (what WERE we thinking?)
1983: Seaver
1984: Torrez (sadly, I KNOW what we were thinking)
1985: Gooden (that solves THAT)

Our current most unstable positions, in terms of rotating opening-day starters, as you may have guessed, tend to be in the outfield.

RF: Five starters in five years (Church-Franoeur-Beltran-Duda-Byrd?)

CF: Five starters in five years (Beltran-Matthews-Pagan-Torres-Niuewenhus/Cowgill/Den Dekker?)

We have only a modest bit more of opening day stability in left, thanks to Bay somehow answering the bell ("and his name is Gus Bell!") twice in recent years.

LF: Seven starters in eight years (Floyd-Alou-Pagan-Murphy-Bay-Harris-Bay-Duda)

2B: Four starters in four years (Castillo-Emaus-Murphy-Turner/Valdespin?)

If Wright gets on the field, it'll be his ninth consecutive (and overall) start. That would tie him with Howard Johnson (who did it at three positions) and Jerry Grote (whose nine starts were twice interrupted by brief interregna at the hands of Duffy Dyer and JC Martin).

He would pass Dwight Gooden (who had eight non-consecutive starts) and Cleon Jones (also eight non-consecs).

Only Buddy Harrelson (11 consecutive and total) and his roommate Tom Seaver (10 consecutive, 11 total) have had more.

Pirates went with the "safe" pick out of Ball State Univ that year passing up on the likes of BJ Upton (2nd overall), Prince Fielder (7th), and Zack Greinke (6th) amongst others.
