I just got an e-mail from a friend of Bob Myrick, telling me that Bob died this morning, possibly while mowing his neighbor's lawn. I can't find any news reports just yet, but if this report is true we'll probably see some official confirmation in the next couple of days.

R.I.P. No. 44 -- and I'm not just looking for an alternate way to say Bob Myrick. For all the hype that has accompanied the Isringhausens, Paytons and Milledges, nobody's ever "been" 44 to me except for Bob Myrick. I'd love to say it's because of some childhood fascination with him, but no, it's just one of those things.

No pitcher who pitched in more games as a Met and only a Met had passed away until now. Myrick is eighth in that regard, fourth among retired pitchers (Innis, Apodaca, Baldwin ahead of him; also Feliciano -- said to be back in Sept with MFYs, Parnell, Pelfrey and Niese).

Met Hunter usually arrives with this sort of news. Very sorry to hear, but I sort of hope I die mowing the neighbor's lawn.

God bless small-town journalism --- even if it does come from a Gannett paper. That article doesn't mention the word baseball until paragraph nine.

I was going to comment on that as well. Its great to know that your life isnt defined by a couple of obscure years thirty plus years ago. Even if it was something as impressive as making and pitching in the majors.

If you guys ever need building supplies around Hattiesberg, theis is where you go. I imagine Robert Carson grew up in a home built with lumber sold by Bob Myrick.

So, we traded Myrick and Mike Bruhert for Doc Ellis, neither of them pitch another inning in the majors, and we still lost the trade as Doc gave us -1.2 (coke-fueled and possibly acid-drenched) wins above replacement.
