bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Howie said that John Lannan, the latest SP to make the best look bad, will probably be non-tendered. He was sent down this April after starting the last two Opening Days for WSH, was pissed off about it, and is only in the rotation to replace Strasburg. Given that he's from Long Island so he might want to play close to home for a discount, even for a lousy team, do you think that the Mets might sign him to a one-year deal? That would allow them to trade Niese, cheap and signed, to get help elsewhere? Or do they think they have "enough" starting pitching?

I can't see him getting much less than the $5 on the market.)
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Even if Lannan makes the same salary, they could possibly get value from another team for Niese because he's under contract. A clever GM could do this... can Sandy?

A clever GM could do this... can Sandy?possibly . I don't see them getting a Gio Gonzalez cache though. Niese is much better than Lannan, and strikes guys out which would be nice of the defense doesn't get appreciably better. Hard to see getting good value to fix that, unless you're confident in the other guys staying healthy/stepping up. I'd rather roll with the SP as a strength.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 I'm sure Lannan could wind up here but I wouldn't swap out Niese because of it. If they want a big splash on the trade market they should offer up Harvey.

Guest Swan Swan H Guests Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 Jonah Keri of Grantland.com has a feeling that the Mets prospects for 2013 might be promising.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 Here's his paragraph on the Mets:The Mets could boast one of baseball's best rotations next year. R.A. Dickey might start the season as the defending Cy Young winner. Jon Niese is quietly becoming one of the most reliable lefty starters in the league. And Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler offer top-of-the-rotation upside. The offense is much thinner, but the Swiss cheese outfield could get a lot better in a hurry, given the depth of the free-agent market at that position (Josh Hamilton, Michael Bourn, B.J. Upton, Nick Swisher, etc.). A bunch of things have to go right, but the Mets have a bit of a sleeper scent to them.I agree about the pitching; it seems to have a high upside and could, if things go well, be real good real soon.I hope (but don't expect) that the Mets will be willing to take a one-year spike in their payroll; knowing that there's going to be a big dropoff in 2014 when Santana and Bay drop off the books. If that happens, then maybe they can add a hitter or two who will make them a bit more respectable in the short term.
Guest Swan Swan H Guests Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 Plus this one tucked at the bottom:But if you're looking for that one, out-of-nowhere story, it just might be the Mets. You never know what the Wilpons' ongoing financial crisis might do to the team's finances, and David Wright, Johan Santana, and Jason Bay will make an ungodly amount of money, with only one of those players likely to produce a full year of above-average results. But 350 innings of Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler could produce electric results, and the Mets' biggest weakness its barren outfield matches up perfectly with the free-agent market's biggest area of depth. Just an early hunch before we embark on our final, monthlong scramble until the crowning of this year's champions.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 The latest Rubin: Relievers Jon Rauch and Ramon Ramirez and outfielder Andres Torres are expected to depart. No one on the roster is safe, with trades a major route to rebuilding the Mets after a fourth straight losing season. R.A. Dickey's future with the organization is not entirely secure, a team source acknowledged.excerpt:Despite knuckleballers often successfully pitching into their 40s, Mets officials appear wary of making a sizable commitment. That could lead Dickey to being traded this offseason if the right deal presented itself, since the Mets would have some starting-pitching depth to absorb his departure.Trading a 20-game winner (and perhaps the reigning Cy Young winner) would not be a popular move among the fan base and could further erode attendance in 2013.Read the rest at http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/8453007/new-york-mets-want-david-wright-become-next-face-franchise-source-says
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 2, 2012 Author Posted October 2, 2012 Jordany scheduled to play second base in winter ball, rather than outfield.Considering our desperate need for major-league ready outfield talent, I think he looks like a good trade prospect.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 17, 2012 Author Posted October 17, 2012 Good news is that the team has room to add seven guys to the roster.More challenging news is that, well, Thole remains at number one on the catcher depth chart, and Nickeas returns to number two.I haven't listed him here, but the Mets also announced that strength and conditioning coach Brad Andress (an early Sandy addition) will not return.ActivatedFromDisabledListRemovedFrom Roster,BecomingFree AgentAdded ToProjectedRosterRemovedFrom Roster,BecomingFree AgentStartingPitchersReliefPitchersCatchersOutfielders=#0000FF]57 JohanSantanaDoB: 3/13/1979=#0000FF]45 =#FF8000]JustinHampsonDoB: 1/23/1989=#0000FF]16 RobJohnsonDoB: 7/22/1982=#0000FF]4 MikeNickeasDoB: 2/13/1983=#0000FF]15 FredLewisDoB: 12/9/1980Your Projected Opening Day 2013 Mets (Orange Indicates Players Have Options)StartingPitchers=#0000FF]43 R.A.DickeyDoB: 10/29/1974=#0000FF]35 =#FF8000]DillonGeeDoB: 4/28/1986=#0000FF]33 =#FF8000]MattHarveyDoB: 3/27/1989=#0000FF]49 JonathonNieseDoB: 10/27/1986=#0000FF]57 JohanSantanaDoB: 3/13/1979ReliefPitchers=#0000FF]46 MannyAcostaDoB: 5/1/1981=#0000FF]73 =#FF8000]RobertCarsonDoB: 1/23/1989=#0000FF]66 =#FF8000]JoshEdginDoB: 12/17/1986=#0000FF]48 FrankFranciscoDoB: 9/11/1979=#0000FF]32 =#FF8000]JennryMejiaDoB: 10/11/1989ReliefPitchersCatchersInfielders=#0000FF]39 BobbyParnellDoB: 9/8/1984=#0000FF]62 ElvinRamirezDoB: 10/10/1987=#0000FF]4 MikeNickeasDoB: 2/13/1983=#0000FF]30 JoshTholeDoB: 4/28/1986=#0000FF]29 =#FF8000]IkeDavisDoB: 3/22/1987Infielders=#0000FF]65 =#FF8000]ZachLutzDoB: 6/3/1986=#0000FF]28 DanielMurphyDoB: 4/1/1985=#0000FF]11 RubenTejadaDoB: 10/27/1989=#0000FF]2 JustinTurnerDoB: 11/23/1984=#0000FF]5 DavidWrightDoB: 12/20/1982Outfielders=#0000FF]23 =#FF8000]MikeBaxterDoB: 12/7/1984=#0000FF]44 JasonBayDoB: 9/20/1978=#0000FF]21 =#FF8000]LucasDudaDoB: 2/3/1986=#0000FF]56 AndrsTorresDoB:1/26/1978=#0000FF]1 =#FF8000]JordanyValdespinDoB: 12/23/1987Also on 40-Man RosterStartingPitchersInfielders=#0000FF]27 =#FF8000]JeurysFamiliaDoB: 10/10/1989=#0000FF]53 =#FF8000]JeremyHefnerDoB: 3/11/1981=#0000FF]36 =#FF8000]CollinMcHughDoB: 6/19/1987=#0000FF]71 =#FF8000]WilmerFloresDoB: 8/6/1991=#0000FF]74 =#FF8000]ReeseHavensDoB: 10/20/1986Outfielders=#0000FF]76 =#FF8000]JuanLagaresDoB: 3/17/1989=#0000FF]9 =#FF8000]KirkNieuwenhuisDoB: 8/7/1987=#0000FF]67 =#FF8000]CesarPuelloDoB: 4/1/1991Potential Free AgentsStartingPitchersReliefPitchers=#0000FF]34 MikePelfreyDoB: 1/14/1984=#0000FF]55 ChrisYoungDoB: 5/25/1979=#0000FF]40 TimByrdakDoB: 10/37/1978=#0000FF]45 =#FF8000]JustinHampsonDoB: 1/23/1989=#0000FF]52 RamnRamrezDoB:8/31/1981ReliefPitchersCatchersInfieldersOutfielders]=#0000FF]60 JohnRauchDoB:9/27/1978=#0000FF]16 RobJohnsonDoB: 7/22/1982=#0000FF]6 KellyShoppachDoB: 4/29/1984=#0000FF]13 RonnyCedeoDoB: 2/2/1983=#0000FF]12 ScottHairstonDoB: 5/25/1980Outfielders=#0000FF]15 FredLewisDoB: 12/9/1980Coaching Staff ManagerBenchCoachBattingCoachPitchingCoachThird BaseCoachFirst BaseCoach=#0000FF]10 TerryCollinsDoB: 5/27/1949=#0000FF]7 BobGerenDoB: 9/22/1959=#0000FF]51 DaveHudgensDoB: 12/5/1956=#0000FF]59 DanWarthanDoB: 12/1/1952=#0000FF]18 TimTeufelDoB: 7/7/1958=#0000FF]26 TomGoodwinDoB: 8/27/1968BullpenCoachBullpenCatchersBullpenCatchersHeadTrainerAssistantTrainerMascot=#0000FF]25 RickyBonesDoB: 4/7/1969=#0000FF]78 EricLangillDoB: 4/9/1979=#0000FF]79 DaveRacanielloDoB: 10/15/1981=#BF8080].=#0000FF] RayRamirez=#BF8080].=#BF8080].=#0000FF] BrianChicklo=#BF8080].=#BF8080].=#0000FF] Mr. Met=#BF8080].
