Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 DLon Gee looks like he's going to be out for a few starts. Who do the Mets turn to next?
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 For only a few starts, I voted Hefner. It doesn't upset the 40 man roster as much as re-adding Batista would. But I was looking for a choice that said "anybody but Schwinden".
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 Really, by backdating his DL status to his last appearance, and with days off and the break, it's conceivable this is a one-start opening. I wouldn't conclude that, though.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 I'd like it to be Harvey, but I think it will be Hefner or Batista. I voted Hefner.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 What I'm hoping for is what you'd like, I think.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 If this is to be brief-- and, with the extra days off, Collins may not need a fifth starter more than once-- it might not be worth it to 40-man Mr. Harvey at this point.Between Hef and this guy...... I will choose Hef.
Guest metsguyinmichigan Guests Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Schwinnie's back, by the way. Since he last left us, he's been in the Blue Jay, Indian and Yankee systems. Not on the 40-man roster, though.

I wouldn't conclude that, though.I really have no idea what the implications of the clot mean to even guess if it's a 'heal the wound and get back out there' recovery or something a little more intensive.I go Dickey, Niese, Young, off day, Santana, Dickey, Niese against Braves/Nats. Then Young against LA and Saturday July 21st is the first game you 'need' that 5th guy. (one day shy of when Gee could be activated) I'd entertain the idea of doing that, and going with an extra reliever. E Ramirez? sure. You'd have a much better idea about Gee by then. Either way, I choose Harvey. Short time term it's a nice trial and I think would give him a better idea of what to work on in AAA. Get a taste of how MLB opposing hitters see him. Long Term..well it seems likely he'd be the guy best suited to give you the most value.Yeah, Schwinden cleared waivers. The Mets haven't seemingly cared about adding him and having to release him, but I'd rather use Hefner and hold the spot open.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Perhaps the following, given the fact that they want to give Johan extra time for his ankle to recover:7/13: Niese7/14: R.A.7/15: Young7/16: OFF7/17: Johan7/18: Niese7/19: R.A.7/20: Young7/21: New GuyUPDATE:Rubin says "bmfc1 knows his shit!":Collins indicated the revised rotation probably now has Jon Niese starting Friday in Atlanta, followed by R.A. Dickey on Saturday and Chris Young on Sunday. There is the potential for Johan Santana to start Sunday instead, but Collins wants to see how Santana responds to Thursday's throwing session during a workout at Turner Field.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 That's what I said, just with Niese/Dickey reversed. Get's both them to face the Nats twice.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Geez--tweets say Batista next Wednesday in WSH. Good idea: it's not like the Nationals are in first place and this could be a very important series. Go ahead and use the suckiest guy on the pitching staff.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 Got a 4.00 ERA as a starter, compared to Schwinny's 11.25 and swinging Hef's 6.89. Maybe not palatable, but it's a tough choice to argue with.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 With the off day on Monday, they don't need a 5th starter until the 21st (see above). This could be a key series and they're screwing around. If they want to start Batista instead of Harvey, fine but do it against the Dodgers.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 Yeah, I'm on board with that.Terry doesn't seem one to load up for a big series. I thought (or hoped) he'd be more aggressive in getting the most out of his horses post-ASG.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 I checked the numbers. I'm not sure how meaningful they are, if at all, or if Terry's checked 'em, but Batista has appeared five times against the Nats this year (5.67 innings) with a 3.18 ERA.

Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 I wouldn't mind seeing McHugh either.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 McHugh has had some rough starts lately.Later
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Since Gee's gone for the year, I change my vote to the six-foot-tall invisible rabbit.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 His divisional rival pedigree aside, Kevin Millwood could be a cheap alternative in trade to fill out the rotation this season. The guy is only making $1M this season for a Seattle team that is going nowhere and is a free agent at the end of the year. He's got a 2.38 ERA and a .197 BAA in his last 10 starts.Maybe one of the AAA guys (not named Harvey if he's not ready) can step up...but if they're serious about trying to make the post-season, I'd like to see a more known quantity step in.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 Joel Sherman this morning's NY Post -- The Mets are sending a contingent of executives to Buffalo tomorrow to watch Matt Harveys Triple-A start against a horrible Toledo team. If they like what they see, Harvey could start Saturday at Citi Field against the Dodgers.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 The only reason for them to go see him is to have him sign paperwork and get a ride back to NY.
