Wally's an unhinged maniac and was moreso back in his (brief) Peanuts days, but I'm sure that sort of motivation is more typical than we'd hope.

Who'sthe 39-y.o. former major leaguer? Wally was so heated i couldn't understand him.

why do people tolerate that shit?
I mean I can understand someone coming out to argue, but the gratuitous insults I mean c'mon, it isn't big, it isn't clever.

is it reaching a point where if he doesn't come out yelling obscenities people are going to say he's not fighting for his players anymore?

Fuck you, Backo has a fucking ring. He fucking earned it. Fuck you.

(I'll hazard a guess and say if he didn't, he wouldn't carry on like that. I don't think he's malicious. Just unhinged. And responses like "What are you talking about?" are going to unhinge somebody like Backo pretty quickly.)

I don't know where the border between malicious and unhinged is. Nor do I know if the Wally depicted there is representative of the man he is now, but Wally remains the only manager I know of in history to get kicked out of a game after a tirade, and then storm into the broadcast booth threatening to beat up the broadcaster.

If a trace of that guy remains, I'm not interested in him as our next manager.

As with "The Bachelor" or bootleg video of amateur "bumfights," I never really understood the entertainment appeal of "watch our manager go crazy-go-nuts." If it's real, it's embarrassing-- a fifty-year-old throwing a tantrum. And if it's a put-on? Well, then, it's even more embarrassing, isn't it?

Well, it's not really bootleg footage, but clips from Playing for Peanuts. The Mets, rather than promote it, pulled it off SNY.

Coercion is the most efficient form of motivation.
