This was in an e-mail that I received from the Mets this morning:

Ike Davis is projected by Bloomberg Sports to bounce back this season, with 22 homers and 83 RBI.

I'm actually hoping for a bit more than that. Those numbers don't seem like much to crow about.

I expect more too. I don't know how they can possibly provide an accurate RBI count without knowing where he's batting, which to my ears hasn't been really stated anywhere yet.

A lot of that depends on what's in front of him --- and right now that's:

[list:2oqxpin8][*:2oqxpin8]Torres, a great athlete but late-bloomer, due to a lack of early interest in in baseball, being literally a poster-child for ADD, and coming off a struggling season;[/*:m:2oqxpin8]
[*:2oqxpin8]Murphy, a guy whose positionlessness and proneness to takeout slides makes it a challenge for him to stay on the field;[/*:m:2oqxpin8]
[*:2oqxpin8]Wright, a guy coming off a broken back, coming off a torn belly, coming off a concussion, apparently coming off a rattling emotional trauma whenever he saw the walls of his home ballpark, and living under the pointless cloud of trade rumors.[/*:m:2oqxpin8][/list:u:2oqxpin8]

Three good players, to different extents, but but three guys with question marks over their lockers.

I really like the team's approach under Hudgens, and I think this offense will find themselves, but whether they find themselves in time to make a mark depends on how many of them can stay on the field.

We should probably split this to You Make The Call: Ike Davis even if it's premature, but I agree on Hudgens. He did an interview with Ted Berg last week, and It was nice to hear him talk about the team's approach and what they're after and how they get there. It's refreshing to hear that there are complex thoughts to this stuff. Also, he praised Lucas Duda in almost a "Well this seems like a gimme answer" way when asked about 'surprise' guys doing well this Spring.

I'm willing to bet that the .302/.383/.543 line Ike was working on last season was not a fluke.

I think it's a wee high.

.290/.375/.533 29 HR, 120 RBI, 12 MVP points, solid D , 1 over the railing catch.

I'll take a whole season of 900 OPS, thanks.

Valley Fever causes joint fatigue, which causes his foot injury to heal improperly and changes his gait to compensate. He thus blows out his achilles/hamstring/knee in mid-July.

.290/15hr/50/rbi/.900 OPS

He will have time to make like Nicholas Cage and find a Valley Girl.

Slow start, building to a scorching middle 2 1/2 months, and an end-of-year taper. 145 G (Terry plays it cautious), 28 HR, 55 XBH, 69 R, 91 RBI, .278/.364/.528

His ritualistic dive into the hotel swimming pool from his second floor balcony goes terribly wrong when Valley Fever dizziness prevents Ike from noticing that the pool has no water.

RIP
