Via Adam Rubin:

Jon Niese and Scott Hairston will be placed on the DL with rib cage injuries, Terry Collins said after Tuesday's loss in Philadelphia.
(didn't know those things were contagious)
Niese reinjured a muscle on his right side delivering a pitch to Philadelphia's Hunter Pence in the third inning. He originally injured the area in his previous start in San Diego, and was pushed back a day before facing the Phillies to give extra time to rest.
Hairston injured his right intercostal muscle on a swing later in Tuesday's game.
Hairston recalled missing a month in 2007 with a pulled oblique, but described this injury as less severe. He expected to receive an MRI after the Mets return home following Wednesday's matinee in Philly.

In addition to two immediate call-ups, the Mets also will have to fill two starting assignments early next week against the Marlins -- Niese's turn and a spot starter for a rainout makeup. Collins expected the two starters would be selected from Chris Schwinden, Miguel Batista and Pat Misch.

Niese regretted not speaking up after the issue got intense delivering the pitch to Pence. The next batter, John Mayberry Jr., belted a three-run homer as Philadelphia took a 4-0 lead en route to a 9-4 win.

i suppose they could call up two pitchers, but I'd like to see them go for Lutz or somebody (Viva Pascucci!) and farm out Igarashi for a few days on general principle, or perhaps part ways with Izzy.

This team is starving like Dracula for fresh blood.

For some reason they are not DLing Hairston till tomorrow? If I understand it.

Also, Ronny Paulino may have a broken toe.

Also, Mike Pelfrey pitches today.

Also, Nickeas is called up.

Getting an MRI for Hairston today, so no DL, although what's the big deal right? He's freaking Scott Hairston.

Or maybe it's that the Bisons will complain if they don't have anyone to play the OF.

This is ridiculous. We are dying for fresh, healthy players and they can't be bothered to put people on the DL and get somebody, anybody to play. Why not just forefeit.

I don't understand it either. If Paulino has a broken toe and Nickeas is up, then DL Paulino and get a bat. If Hairston is hurt, get a bat. Today's game might go 20 innings.

Pre-July 31, Rubin said that the Mets didn't want to trade Paulino. I didn't understand that.

And off tomorrow.

Paulino doesn't have enough service time for free agency. Accordingly, he remains under the Mets' (or the team they traded him to) control for 2012. He's a useful part at a relatively cheap price.

Mike Nickeas took the AAA team bus from Columbus to Toledo last night, took taxi to Detroit ($120) and flew to Philly.

He had one plate appearance as a pinch-hitter. He walked, which then required that Capuano come in as a pinch runner for him. Sounds to me like he's not doing so well.

The good news was that Capuano appeared in a game without giving up a run.

Gotta add that one to the act.
