Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Maybe a thread where we collect Wayne Hagin moments good and bad?Last night when Mota came into the game, Hagin noted the booing and, being Wayne Hagin, attributed it not to the Scott Spezio Debacle nor the Piazza Drilling but to his steroid suspension.

MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 I remember last year when he said "Coming into the game is ex-Detroit Tiger Octavio Dotel".That's when I commented that he has no Mets soul. Later
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Ha , been listening to the radio more than usual lately and a good thing here.....a game a few weeks back when Bay dropped the ball in the outfield and threw to 2nd and Murphy didn't/couldn't make the tag play? , Hagin right away chastised him for not being in position to collect the trow quicker, and sure enough when I saw the TV replay I had to agree.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 I'm at the point where I have to think real hard to know whether Wayne or Howie is talking.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Another highlight of last night's radiocast was Howie's attempt to engage Wayne in a discussion of the Monkees but giving up after Wayne's biggest contribution on the exchange was remembering "Peter York."(That said, it was a weak attempt by Howie to force something, stemming from a scoring change prompting Howie to bring up white-out and its inventor, Mrs. Nesmith.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 And that's part of the problem with Cohen ant Rose not being together , that had that thing didn't they?, it was all effortless like two lifelong friends yapping on about anything.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 There's a reason why they do the alternating-innings (with little "color" interjection from the other guy) thing a bit more than most play-by-play teams-- they have little-to-no chemistry.Even if Wayne didn't take 40 seconds to give you the play result-- he doesn't describe action, so much as he circumscribes what occurred-- this would suggest that this can't be a terribly successful long-term partnership. Indeed, half the time, they sound like they're watching different games. And seriously... if you've got what seems like it'll be a long-term gig with a club, wouldn't you try and study up a bit on some of the names, beyond what a casual baseball fan might know? It's year five, and Hagin knows less about Met history now than he did in '07.

Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 THAT's right. '07 was Rose-McCarthy, right?

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 The big breakup of Radio Perfection followed 2005. For two seasons, it was Gary and Howie. Tom came on board in Spring Training 2006 and became unbearable in Spring Training 2006.Wayne Hagin strikes me as punishment. "If you're too cheap to come out to the ballpark, get cable or sign up for MLB At Bat, this is what we're giving you."

Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 I never hated Ted the way I hate Wayne. He's just a mercenary. He's got no Mets pedigree. He's not from New York, he didn't grow up a Mets fan, he didn't play for the Mets. He's a fucking Rockies announcer in hiding. He's constantly fucking up players' names and he takes far too long to get to the point of things.I'd like to see him telekinetically levitated into the air by Sissy Spacek as Carrie ("They're not dirty pillows, Mother, they're called BREASTS!") and set aflame and/or fucked by angry oxen. Either one would satisfy me equally.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Classic Hagin today top of the 8th, Beltran at the plate , Jose at third and Turner at second, Wayne sounds totally surprised that Turner is scoring from second on the Beltran single, he even admits to it....I had no idea for several seconds what was going on after the routine "Reyes in from 3rd base" call, he was not at all prepared for Turner..kinda funny actually. No Howie today , Ed and Wayne......I need a blow after it.What was really annoying was Coleman would repeat nearly verbatim everything Wayne said after a play that warranted him chiming in.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Howie returns Monday night. His eldest daughter (if he has more than one) is 22 this year, so maybe there was a college graduation. I remember him skipping out on Mets Extra the weekend of her birth in July 1989 -- Sid struck out 16 Braves but got beat by Lonnie Smith.Or as Howie would refer to it, "when my daughter was born."
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 I don't have the same animosity as most do toward Wayne. Maybe that's because he's not everybody else other than Howie... because almost everybody else other than Howie stinks. Charlie Slowes in DC is good (a Fordham grad) but most radio guys (and gals, Suzyn) are awful. Wayne tries hard, too hard but whenever I get frustrated with him, and wonder why he's there, I remember that he's the 2d best radio broadcaster in NY. I know--that's damning with faint praise but I don't hate the guy even though he's not great.

Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Having him call PBP is like putting Byrdak up against a solid pair of righties-- it doesn't put him in a success-conducive position.Slot him at full-time color, and I don't have nearly the same objection.
Guest themetfairy Guests Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 My grandfather was blind, and always preferred radio calls to television because they would generally describe the plays that he couldn't see in greater detail. When I listen to Wayne, I always feel that my grandfather would have been disappointed by his poor descriptions of the action.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 I'd like to slot him in an airmail drop.

I do think he's at least semi-insightful.
