According to Ed Coleman from WFAN, Luis Castillo has asked for and just received his release from the Mets.

Scheduled to be in today's starting lineup, Coleman reported this morning that Castillo is currently packing up his locker in Port St. Lucie.

Hmmm... asked for his release, huh?

Probably a smart move. He'll get his $6 million anyway, and he becomes a free agent, who anyone can sign for the major league minimum. He'll be a Phillie before Monday.

he'll probably get ripped for asking to be cut so that he can get his lazy ass his money.

Luis Castillo to Newsday on what he said in meeting: "I said I came here to play and you didnt give me the chance. You didnt use me.

Is he kidding? What a horse's ass.

Luis Castillo has been cut by Mets
7 m ago By Jim Baumbach

Luis Castillo has been cut by the Mets, Castillo told Newsday.

The Mets confirmed the Castillo news, and general manager Sandy Alderson is expected to address the media shortly. Castillo is owed $6 million this season in the last of a four-year, $27 million deal put together by former GM Omar Minaya.
"I'm going to wait, go home and hope to catch on with another team," Castillo told Newsday. Im fine, man. Ive done a lot of things in baseball.

Castillo originally was in the lineup for Friday's game against the Braves and appeared to have survived the round of morning cuts. But while players took batting practice, Castillo was pulled into a closed-door meeting with general manager Sandy Alderson and manager Terry Collins and handed his walking papers.

While walking away from the stadium in a dark shirt and jeans, Castillo told Newsday it was a tough day for him because he's never been cut before. He also said he wishes he was given more of a chance by Collins this spring training.

"I said I came here to play, and you didnt give me the chance," Castillo said he told Collins and Alderson. "You didnt use me.
Castillo said he felt healthy and that he didn't think he could have done anything differently to stick around with the Mets.
Sometimes these things happen and thats what it is," Castillo said. "But you never know whats going to happen. Maybe Ill end up with another team and do good.

Oliver Perez appears to still be safe. Perez, due $12 million this season, is supposed to pitch in relief Friday and Saturday as he continues his "tryout" to be a lefthanded specialist. It's still unlikely he will make the Mets' Opening Day roster.

Dillon Gee, Boof Bonser, Ryota Igarashi, Taylor Tankersley, Dusty Ryan, Raul Chavez, Russ Adams and Jason Pridie were sent to minor-league camp.

The Mets have 37 players remaining in camp, meaning they'll have to trim a dozen more players prior to Opening Day in two weeks.

Alderson

After a long evaluation during spring training, after consulting with [manager] Terry [Collins] and the coaching staff, I made a recommendation to ownership in the best interest of the organization and Louie that he be released, general manager Sandy Alderson said. Ownership approved.

Alderson refused to handicap the remaining field of candidates, but Rule 5 pick Brad Emaus appears a leading candidate. He has a supporter in J.P. Ricciardi, who was the general manager who drafted Emaus with the Toronto Blue Jays, and who has a track record of walking more than striking out while displaying power that is in line with the Mets front offices philosophy.

Also seems to imply that the "asked for his release" thing was a false report.

he got as much or more ABs as every other 2b candidate other than Dan Murphy, who they played more to learn if he could handle the position. And what are they going to learn about Castillo that the last 3 years of his career didn't already tell them? That his range has diminished to the point that his defense is no longer an asset? that as a powerless hitter, he relied on a OB% & speed, but his speed is gone, too? Plus, he's a whiner.

good riddance. Even if they play Luis Hernandez, he won't contribute less as a #8 hitter than Castillo, and he'll certainly cover more ground. I still think you play Murphy and live with his glove. The guy is producing an .850 OPS this spring.

I agree you go about Murphy, but I think the Mets have given up on making a keystoner of him.

How about that though?, play Murph primarily because of his offense but as soon as he starts making errors in the field the masses will start screaming for a glove man over there.

It's a fine line to thread no?

Agreed on Murphy. But Hernandez is like a walkless Castillo with the bat.

lol@Metsblog

the Mets now understand sunk and opportunity cost

Yes, Matt, we all know you took a crash-course in microeconomics when the new administration took over.

The only way the other contestants were going to get enough ABs at this point was to let Castillo go, so you either commit to him now or boot him now. I don't expect the choice to be regretted.

Klapisch: Sandy "caved."

Who saw that coming?

Mets do something. Mets are idiots. Klapisch's next thesis is always predicatable.

It's as accurate as his report on Johan earlier in the week was.

How long before the Klap makes his first ****y remark. 1,2,3...

Were the Mets going to the World Series with him in the starting lineup? Please.

.....4 sentences in!

Castillo was nevertheless the best defender of the bunch,

What are odds that the Klap doesn't support this statement?

Its not Daniel Murphy, a good but not great player without a real position; nor is it Brad Emaus, Luis Hernandez or Justin Turner, none of whom hit with any with authority.

This is the best he comes up with why Castillo should be preferred.

chasing only 17 percent of pitches out of the strike zone (12 points lower than the major league average).

So 12 points lower than the ML average is the new standard for acceptability.

He connected on 94 percent of the pitches he swung at, and failed to connect on only 1.8 percent of strikes.

Fuck me, if there's a worthless statistic to conjure up an argument, you can guarantee the Klap to find it.

And as for his attitude problem, consider it from another prism: How else would a player with nearly 1,900 hits in his career react when told hed be going against a Rule 5 draft pick (Emaus)?

Gee, I don't know, you can start by not being a **** about it.....sorta like you.

I don't think that's a worthless stat. He just cribbed it out of context (and without citation) from a far-superior article.

For a player like Adam Dunn it may be quite relevant - but for a player who struggles to get the ball out of the infield on a good day, his connecting rate is so not going to tell me a great deal. That's the way I see it, anyway.

If I have this right, there are 36 guys remaining in camp, and eleven who have to be demoted or disabled or dispatched by next Friday:

Manny Acosta
Pedro Beato
Taylor Buchholz
Chris Capuano
D.J. Carrasco
R.A. Dickey
Pat Misch
Jon Niese
Bobby Parnell
Mike Pelfrey
Oliver Perez
Johan Santana
Chris Young
Blaine Boyer
Tim Byrdak
Jason Isringhausen
Michael O'Connor

Mike Nickeas
Ronny Paulino
Kai Gronauer
Josh Thole

Ike Davis
Brad Emaus
Nick Evans
Luis Hernandez
Chin-lung Hu
Daniel Murphy
Jose Reyes
Justin Turner
David Wright

Jason Bay
Carlos Beltran
Lucas Duda
Scott Hairston
Angel Pagan
Willie Harris

Is anyone missing? Or is there anyone on this list who's no longer around?

The Roster thread should be up to date. I know Gronauer is gone.

Mike O'Connor (or "Snoz" as I prefer to call him) has been re-assigned to minor league camp per Rubin, A.

That's too bad - I liked what I saw from him this spring.

I like him too, but he's not on the 40 and can therefore be demoted, unlike just about everybody else he's competing with. I expect him to be the first guy called up, though.

well, as a specialist maybe. Sandy hinted that it'd be Igarashi as the next guy to call on.

That was more in the sense of "We're about to lose some depth due to 40-man roster considerations. Brace for it."

I imagine Iggy was just a name he was throwing out there to demonstrate the hard truth that the team was about to lose a feller or two.

Fair enough, but also he's been a guy on and off the 40 man already and up here before, so that (provided he's not sucking) would probably factor in versus adding a new guy on. Then again, Iggy's contract status would require him to be demoted through waivers again, where they could option O'Connor if they added him? Ultimately, I think they're 'auditioning' for different roles anyway.
