seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I guess that's why he never responded to my autograph request. Jay's as iconic a Mets figure as there ever has been to me; he's been with the team longer than I've been a fan, so I figured he'd be fun to add to the collection. I guess not.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 That recount (almost to the word) came up in a thread as well after JSW called him "Horrorwitz" and an anti-semitic Jew, and a bunch of posters, reading the recount, responded that he didn't sound so much anti-semitic, as much as an autocratic asshole, as his expectations would be an unreasonable challenge to an observant member of virtually any faith.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted March 2, 2011 Author Posted March 2, 2011 I'm only had one encounter with him and it was in a group setting and he didn't seem scary or anything. He didn't seem overly engaged in the conversation either though.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Granted, I don't know the guy. But all anecdotal evidence-- "good" and "bad"-- seems to point to his not being the usual kind of autocrat/Type A, the guy who relishes being an asshole because HE'S THE MAN HERE (or because others treated him like shit when he was powerless). He seems instead to be a guy with extremely narrow focus, like he can't understand or talk to you if you're not part of his ken-- athlete/coach/manager/reporter-- and aren't his kind (screw family, off-job friends or anything but the job). It's a good thing the Mets HAVE kept him on for 32 years. He seems like he'd sooner hang himself in his office-- with shlubby energy and un-charisma!-- than leave.

Jay has run PR for MLB events like ASGs and World Series.
