Terry Collins, 4/13/11:

"We're one pitch away and one swing away from being 9-2, and we're not. But the next 11 we need to be 9-2. We need to get it going and do the things we haven't done thus far."

This is a hell of a thing to say 11 games into your managerial stint, no? But subpar play on the opening homestand given ticket sales is a real desperate situation for this team IMO.

And we all do hope Terry has fair fucks, don't we?

Hell, I hope he has better than fair fucks.

Although that's what everyone will be running with, he's not actually saying the Mets need to be 9-2. He's saying that the Mets need to win the games they put themselves in the position to win, by getting that hit and making that pitch. It might not always equate to 9-2 over any given 11 game stretch though.

That's what he actually said. I'd settle for being 2-0 today and going from there.

"I play the game to win, I play the game hard, the way it should be played. I want to be great, and I'll do whatever I can to make that happen. I'm never satisfied."

--- Matt Harvey, cliche-spouting Type-A maniac

"I loved Paul O'Neill's approach and the way he would get so mad at himself. He felt that he needed to be perfect every time, and I loved that."

--- Matt Harvey, not-so-closeted YLDB

I mean I think we have shown even with some of these injuries that weve had you look at [Pedro] Beato, who was arguably one of our best relievers, he was on the DL. Hes hopefully back today or somewhat soon. I think when you put us together I dont think theres one thing and you look at and you get kind of wowed at, but I think collectively you got a bunch of scrappy guys that love going out there and playing baseball that know how to play the game the right way. I think when you look at those kinds of teams can be very dangerous because you got guys that know how to play the game that may not wow you with real long home runs or real high batting averages, but you know you have guys that know how to play the game and know how to win and can win. I think that Im going to try to get back as soon as possible and start playing at the level that I think Im capable of playing. Jose Reyes is playing out of his world right now. Carlos Beltran is vintage Carlos Beltran and I think that Jason Bay is going to come around and get hot and if he does offensively I think well be just fine. If our starting pitching can continue to go out there and keep us in games I really like our chances and I really like the way this team is made up.

--- David Wright, performing the unlikey feat of executing a cliche hat trick while on the DL

Even the way the reiterations align is gorgeous. It's like he had an intuitive sense of how many beats to wait before returning to to his empty point.

I love the guy and I hope to someday live with him. To wake up a cook him a stack of pancakes while he sleeps in, because he works hard enough. But sometimes I wonder if he's the Cal Ripken of bullshit.

that's Jeter you're thinking of.

not that Wright is much better, but occasionally he gives you something interesting.

Jason Bay, kinda giving up:

Afterward, Bay was asked if hes used to seeing balls that would be home runs in most park die in outfielders gloves at Citi Field.

I wasnt used to that one, especially off of a guy like that, Bay said of the first-inning drive. But you get used to it. I thought I hit it pretty well. At least, well enough to go off the wall. But apparently not.

Bay hit 36 home runs with the Red Sox in 2009 before signing with the Mets as a free-agent. Bay has just eight home runs in 115 games as a Met. Bay has been hampered by injuries, most recently a ribcage injury that has kept him sidelined for all but 20 games this season. Bay has four homers in 192 career at-bats at Citi Field.

It definitely doesnt help, no question, Bay said when asked if it was mentally taxing to have would-be home runs turn into outs. But the parks been the way it has been and it hasnt changed. No question, but you go up there and you do the best that you can.

"Maybe next spring when we have our media workshop for the players, Fred can come and sit in on it."

--- Mike Pelfrey, suddenly in mid-season form

I don't doubt it's true

"Poor David hits the ball to right-center so well and there it's an out," Francoeur said before the Royals lost 3-1 to the Yankees Tuesday night. "To me, you start trying to pull the ball and getting into habits. And I know it's frustrating for David playing in that park."

"I'm not saying guys are complaining all the time, but when you hit balls to right-center 415 feet and it's an out or off the wall, it's pretty devastating to a player. Especially when you turn on ESPN at night and see someone flipping one [at Yankee Stadium] 320 [feet] in the first row and it's a home run. It's tough."

Francoeur is talking like a loser.
