You know, if the Yankees acquired Rafael Furcal, it would scare the pants of Jeter's negotiating team. They would literally walk into the negotiating room pantless. After they capitulate, the Yankees could flip the guy again, or wind up stuck with a high-priced backup for a season.

It's funny, just signing Furcal and releasing him after Jeter caved would probably save them money.

Heyman says that the Mets "are closing in on a deal with veteran right-hander Chris Young, who would fit their park perfectly."

Was Olney that said 'fits the park perfectly' I believe.

I wonder how much? He had a 8.5 million option declined by the Padres. does he take peanuts so early?

He was 85-86 on the gun when he returned last season after shoulder surgery. A lot like John Maine actually, with a lot more upside. Interesting though.

I suppose if I can root for ex-Braves, ex-Phils and ex-MFYs, I can root for a Princeton guy. But it won't be easy.

I hadn't realized that Troy Tulowitzki was good enough to be locked up for the next 10 years.

I'm still not sure he's good enough.

That's interesting stuff - both because Tulo was pre-FA plus already locked up for the next three years, and because, aside from ARod, you just haven't seen contracts that go out that far in recent years.
One of the last that did is actually the Rockies w/Todd Helton - an 11 yr deal IIRC which is slated to end in 2011. Rox got their money's worth in the early years there but Helton, while still decent, has been much closer to average in recent seasons and is simply old and slow now.
The obvious comparison here is Jeter because of the position and age as Tulo is one year younger than Jeter was when he signed his just-ended 10 yr contract.

ARod, Helton and Jeter were all better than this guy at the time they signed their contracts.

Hell, Jeter had a handful of rings. Tulowitzki has already had 40% of his seasons shortened due to injury.

Reyes must be thinking , " hey I'll have me some of that".....good times ahead....Pujols is surely worth 3 times this contract ....fucks sake......does Charles Wang now own the Rockies?

But the money's right, right? And it'll only get righter.

It's not my money...but it looks to be OK for the talent. The injuries scare me. A LOT.

I wonder what prompted them to extend a guy who was already under contract for 3 more years.

Didn't the Brewers sign ....... to a 10 year deal? or at least a really long one? why can't I remember his name?

Braun. 8 years actually. and when I searched for his contract i found this thread about a random Gammons rumor about trading him. Mimics the Reyes rumors in a lot of ways.

When a contract calls for an average of $19mil/yr and doesn't even begin for another 4 years it's not a done deal that the money is right and certainly not that it's going to be righter by the time 2020 rolls around.

Well, I didn't read the fine print closely, but the bottom line I got was "With the new contract, which includes a club option for 2021, Tulowitzki is guaranteed $157.75 million over 10 seasons, according to contract information obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press."

So I'm reading $15.7 million average over ten. I guess the first few years were already locked in and it doesn't actually slice up that way.

Oh, sure, but I was comparing it to Jeter's $18.9 million x 10 a decade ago and... and that's about as far as I went.

Theriot gets traded to the Dodgers. In keeping up the Ollie comparisons, De la Rosa has resigned with his current team for more than he's worth.

Didn't he get traded by the Dodgers to the Cardinals?

Rosenthal reports that Iwakuma to the A's looks dead as he is supposed to be in the Bay area tomorrow for his physical but he's still in Japan. A's would get back their $19 million posting fee. No one wants to play there.

Move them to Sacramento, please.

Two years for four mils , Melvin will have made over 40 million in his career , well worth it too.

Are the players paraded around a paddock?, because I can see Alderson looking thoughtful with a pipe hanging from his mouth and wearing a tweed cap while his lieutenants do his bidding.
