Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 You know, it's funny. I've been hearing the name Ken Oberkfell for more than 25 years. But I wouldn't recognize the man if I were sitting across from him on the train.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 He wore a beard most of his MLB career, I think. Sticks to the stache, nowadays.

You done with that 'Weekend' section there, buddy?"
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 As a player he was stocky with yellow curly hair.I get the impression Obie's a real, you know, old school jocky baseball coach type.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Holy crap. Not in a million years would I recognize him.All I remember about him is the beard and powder blue.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 I remember guys from that era distinctly from their baseball card pictures. This is my Oberkfell image:
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2010 Author Posted November 12, 2010 While ya'll were off yesterday rest assured that your favOURite bookie Paddy Power was working the phones and has come out with new oddsWhile we took a lot of heavy bets for Valentine he was never in the running our sources say , the bookie never loses right? We can't separate Melvin and Collins right nowMelvin - 3/1Collins 3/1Hurdle - 5/1Chip Hale - 8/1Our sources at Newsday are saying Melvin, Hurdle and Collins have emerged as clear favOURites to advance to the second round of interviews with Chip Hale a possibility. Sources indicate Hale will likely be on the coaching staff regardless of who gets the job. Mets brass think highly of him but with no MLB coaching experience Alderson is not likely to choose him.Wally Backman is likely going to be offered a "promotion" to Class A St. Lucie next season, only in baseball is going from Brooklyn to St. Lucie considered a promotion.Backman - 30/1Alderson and his new lieutenant, Paul DePodesta, will interview Triple-A Buffalo manager Ken Oberkfell and Double-A manager Tim Teufel before moving forward.Oberkfell and Teufel - 100/1
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Have they scratched DeMarlo Hale?

MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Why don't they just platoon Teuffel and Backman?Later
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 I know its' a long long time ago but could Clint Hurdle's shoplifting escapade hurt him especially in light of current events in the Mets clubhouse?
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 I'm thinking that Clint Hurdle's theft of salary from the Rockies for every year he worked for 'em, save '07, weighs a lot heavier in our decision-makers' minds.

He added that the list of managerial candidates may expand by one or two, but is largely complete.Valentine boner!Adam Rubin wrote:One potential additional interviewee is ex-Met Jose Oquendo, who has spent the past 11 seasons as the St. Louis Cardinals' third base coach.Alderson hired Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa as manager with the Oakland Athletics, and that relationship would serve as a natural bridge to Oquendo becoming a candidate. Not completely deflated here. Maybe Oquendo is, um, Bobby cover.Think about it (but not too hard because I'm grabbing here). If you were talking to Valentine, wouldn't it make some sense to initially publickly meet with him late in the game so he doesn't tower over the whole process? No? OK.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Seems as though Alderson and Valentine just aren't a good mix for whatever reason.I'd like for them to have Oquendo in, sure. I think Hale must have everything going for him but ML experience.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2010 Author Posted November 12, 2010 Jose Oquendo?, odds start at 500/1....now , if you wanted odds on him being Cards manager after LaRussa then you can get early bird specials at 10/1 Because we at Paddy Power are nice we WILL NOT be taking anymore of your money in regards to Valentine......you might instead want to spend such money on treatment .
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2010 Author Posted November 15, 2010 Well , the Valentine refuses to die.......Alderson with Burkhardt - lukewarm, tepid??? yes and yes Alderson refuses to rule out ValentineBobby Valentine is unlikely to be the next manager of the Mets, but general manager Sandy Alderson would not exactly put his name to rest when questioned by SNY's Kevin Burkhardt.Alderson said, ``Well, everybodys eligible. Youre eligible Its obviously a name that has been floated, its been discussed in the media Id rather not talk about individual names at this point, but, obviously, Bobby Valentine is a name that weve considered and is a well-known possibility for us.Until proven otherwise, the Mets are in save-a-buck mode and are not paying the millions it would take to bring back Valentine, who has priced and/or talked himself out of every job he has been mentioned for since returning from Japan.Valentine is making plenty from ESPN to second guess other teams and managers. Why would he settle for less to have others second guess him in the dugout? Alderson will remain the highest paid person in management. Trouble is, no one buys a ticket to see the general manager.
Guest The Second Spitter Guests Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 Valentine is making plenty from ESPN to second guess other teams and managers. Why would he settle for less to have others second guess him in the dugout? His ego is conflated by two opposing forces (1) He goes to a ballclub where he's worshipped by many and where a WS will ensure his baseball immortality; (2) He believes he's worth more than any other manager. So the answer to the question is: If (1)>(2).
