Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 He apparently decided he couldn't wait until the end of the season. His 90-year-old mother has been very ill, it seems.http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AsUj7itfQNwJt12NEoiDq4wRvLYF?slug=tsn-166180
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 The poor woman didn't even see the Cubs win their last one, old but not that old.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 I think he just can't take watching the Cubs play anymore.I am surprised that he is stepping down.I hope his mom is around for many more years.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 Nice career, Lou.I remember you as being a very loud Yankee manager.Have a nice retirement. But right now I'm more concerned that the Mets offense looks like it retired before today's game.Later
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 If you haven't seen it try and catch the "Best Of Lou" collection of clips they have been running on ESPN.I didn't realize it til I saw these clips.I am gonna miss this guy.I've seen the bit 3 times so far today and the one clip, where he goes to kick the hat and misses it, cracks me up every time.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 Managed 5 teams for 23 seasons over 25 years. Just 9 losing seasons but only 1 league title and WS championship, with the mercurial 1990 Reds.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2010 Author Posted August 22, 2010 That Reds team looks like such an aberration when you look back on the historical record. It was bookended by two 5th-place seasons of 75 wins and 74 wins, respectively. And they only won 91 games to finish in first that year.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 And Oakland was such a ridiculously heavy favorite that year that whoever bet the Reds to not just win the WS but sweep probably made a fortune ... except that I doubt anyone actually did.At least half of Lou's losing seasons came while in TBThe other high/low point of his career is probably the 2001 Mariners. 116 wins and then barely competitive in the playoffs
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 They put on a great show in the NLCS to beat a very strong Pittsburgh team then swept the WS
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Pinella coached against the Pirates when they were good? Damn, Pinella was around a long, long time.
