But what about this dopey theory I'll happily espouse: Pelfrey began to be less wonderful right about the time Manuel told Pelf's BFF Maine that he was completely dispensable to the team. Right around when I noticed Pelf had a new bench buddy in Dickey, I was impressed how he adapted to the realities of the business. But I wonder if there was something to the Pelfrey-Maine relationship that made Pelf a good pitcher.

Then again, Maine had his best season when Guillermo Mota shared a clubhouse with him, so I'm talking out my hat.
