From the IGT (cuz I hate when topics like this get lost in threads):

Ken Rosenthal says that the Mets are shopping Castillo to make room for Murphy.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/MLB- ... May-042710

The Rosenthal piece contains the usual story about how the Mets are talking to other clubs (like there are times when that ever stops) and he even jokes about how that phrase is basically on his laptop's version of 'speed dial'.
The part I don't buy is the one about how the impending return of Murphy makes this more likely. He never was a 2nd baseman, has barely tried 2nd base, and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks he can be even a passable 2nd baseman. And if that means a lot more starts/fill-ins for Cora that's not exactly an upgrade.

In other 2B news, Kaz Matsui (hitting a lot worse than Luis this year and last) was just DFA'd by Houston with a decent amount of money on his deal. Presumably they tried to deal him before cutting him loose too.

Not much of a market for second basemen hitting .141 as Matsui was.

I don't think Rosenthal gets the whole picture many times, or at least, he's putting the pieces together all wrong.

I don't think it's happening, because dramatic change tends to happen deliberately, particuarly in Flushing, but I'd love to see Murphy get some time there.

The Castillo contract has hamstrung the Mets, they've been forced (or rather forced themselves) to pass on Orlando Hudson who has been out there as a FA 2 years in a row now

Not the best contract for sure but Louie has been fine in what he brings to a team this season and last(dropped pops aside).Plenty of people liked Hudson but IIRC he was benched last season.

Anyway, I think this is a terrible idea.

i think its a great idea!

all those people who have been clamoring for the mets go just get rid of luis fucking castillo will finally get what they asked for, and it will be so awful that they will see the error of their ways, and from that day forward will be more thoughtful in their demands of their team, realizing that simply because a player isn't great, or even necessarily good, doesn't mean that there isn't worse out there, and that not good player is the only thing standing in between something worse and the roster of your favorite team. fans will no longer call up radio stations and blurt out their nonsensical ideas without first thinking through the possible ramifications of those ideas and working through at least a cursory risk/reward analysis. metfandom as a whole will be improved, and, seeing this place as a beacon, shining brightly all through the dark stormy night, will flock here to bask in the glow of those who knew better all along, and our crane pool community will grow and grow and it will be truly glorious indeed.

actually, i kindof like the idea, with a few provisos. well, really the only one is that murphy be the primary second baseman in the minors until such time that he demonstrates adequate enough proficiency for his combined offensive and defensive productivity to be at least equal to the combined offensive and defensive proficiency of luis castillo. i like murph. i think he can hit enough to be a mediocre defensive 2b. i think he's capable of fielding the position adequately. i only really worry about making the pivot.

Point of clarification: He was benched by Joe Torre, who may calm hearts and minds like green tea does an angry colon, but is a Manuel-class game manager. (Belliard was "hot." Torre stuck with him beyond his freshness date, and into the playoffs.)

Agreed. In part because there isn't any second-base-playing prey out on the veldt for an upgrade-seeking hunter to take down... 'cause it's midseason (which tends to be a seller's market).

Unless they're actually thinking about Tejada...

It's all a goof show and a moot point at least until Muprhy gets a minor league rehab assignment.

Sadly, Castillo was one of the Mets most consistent performers in 2009. Though not great this season, he still gets on base at a good rate.

The Mets have far greater needs that they should be addressing in order to improve the team.

Well, I'm not sure what needs they were hoping to address. All we know is a report* claims that Castillo was being dangled (even as we hear he's hurting this evening). We don't know what they were allegedly shopping him for.
