Some random thoughts:

With runners on first and second with one out in the eighth, Scioscia pinch hits for Napoli with Gary Matthews Jr. In what universe is Matthews a better hitter than Napoli?

I was OK with the call on Aybar. It's one thing when a player moves over the bag to catch the ball and throw to first, it's another thing when the player catches the ball with both feet firmly planted off of the bag.

Fuentes made a terrible pitch on 0-2 to A-Rod, but that's a catchable fly ball in absolutely every other park.

I was actually impressed with Izturis' ability to turn two on the shovel throw. But on the last play he was spun around, on a wet surface with a wet ball, and turning one wouldn't have been fatal. Normally I like aggressive play from infielders, but to quote a famous philosopher, "A man's got to know his limitations."

NYDN's Bill Madden not only praises the non-call on that "neighborhood" play at 2nd but does so seemingly because it gave the Yanx an extra chance to win:

After all the egregious blown calls that have plagued the postseason, it was refreshing last night to see veteran umpire Jerry Layne make a gutsy safe call at second base on Melky Cabrera because Angels shortstop Erick Aybar didn't have his foot on the bag after making a potential double-play relay to first.

Game 3: Leadoff HR by Jeter, rest of lineup goes quietly.

First pitch at 4:14 -- what are the odds of 'House' Not being delayed tonight? - (iow, the game running less than 3:46)

Chone Figgins leads off with a single agains Pettitte

Hunter DP ends bottom first. Now Yanks have 2 on nobody out in the second, and Weaver needs outs badly.

Love how McCarver & Buck called out Pettite for having a balk move, said his rep lets him get away with using it, and pointed out how it gives him such an advantage in a situation like the one in the first when Figgins was on. Also love how neither seemed to give a shit that something like that is not good.

I like that GameDay calls the Angels' second baseman "Howard Kendrick."

HOWARD is solid and serious, somebody from whom I'd consider buying insurance (while ultimately passing). HOWIE is somebody you remember to pick up after band practice, or somebody you click off when he tries to get you to choose between briefcases.

I'm at work. How many "Lie to Me" cast members have they worked into the production so far?

They had to give YLDB's Nicholson and Sandler their facetime first. Nicholson, it should be noted, is wearing a purple polo with the red, July 4th "stars and stripes" yankee hat. Lookin' real dapper.

Angels could really use one of those 4 singles, 2 BB, 3 SB, 5-run innings. We're ready when you are, Halos.

Speed on first, speed at the plate, with a lefty on the mound and creaky Jorge behind the plate.

Drag bunt wouldn't be entirely out of order, would it?

4-3 Halos after 7.

At least Izturis got a go-ahead SF, but again Napoli gets pinch-hit for. Did Napoli run over Scioscia's dog?

In case anybody was wondering, Darren Oliver has gotten paid roughly $3M less over the past three years than Scot Schoeneweis has.

I guess Napoli doesn't face RHPs. It was a LHP last time Scioscia swapped him out too.

Meanwhile this Jepsen guy hasn't gotten anyone out yet -- walk, HR, single, walk (only the pitchout/CS in between has saved his ass) ... and now he gets a K

I swear these teams take stupid pills before playing the Yanks.

As questionable as the Mets baserunning has been at times this year, they did nothing worse than what Abreu just did.

Why do I bother?

Between the Twinkies and the Angles that's not only about 6 or 7 dumb plays so far but it's 6 or 7 [u:1tjbjisl]REALLY[/u:1tjbjisl] dumb plays and most of them at brutally crucial times.

Not surprised to learn Abreu did something stupid. Can I ask what?

Leadoff 2B in the 8th inning of a tie game -- thinks about trying for a triple but then changes his mind after he's about 35 feet past 2nd.
Jeter got the relay throw, threw behind him and Abreu just missed getting back to the back by 11 or 12 feet.
