Grabbing that microphone and telling the whole stadium, "Now I'm The Captain and Lou Gehrig has been irrevocably reduced to Tennille"...really, I thought it was uncalled for.

When I read this post earlier I thought of "Don't Go Breaking My
Mark" -- which after caffeine was Elton and Kiki, not Cap't & Tennille.

I thought it showed no class in the post game press conference that Jeter revealed that he is forcing Bob Sheppard to record a new at bat introduction..

"Shortstop... Number 2... Derek... Jeter..., here comes the greatest yankee hitter ever ......Number 2 ....greatest yankee hitter ever ... Number 2"

It was kind of odd watching brief clips of the press conference he did yesterday (and also after the game where he tied it) because just seeing him do it emphasized how few of those he's done over the years. As visible as he's been on the field (and in commercials) he's almost invisible otherwise. To his credit he doesn't duck reporters during the obligated post-game time but he usually gets through it with the bare minimum required; he'll spout a handful of cliches and then get outta Dodge. On the radio he'll do the basic Spring Training interview and then rarely if ever be heard from again for the entire year. FAN talkies have said that attempts to get Jeter on the radio for a 10-minute chat in-season are usually met (via a MFY spokes-lackey) with a "Derek's preparing for the game" brush-off. It could be a Tuesday night in June against KC with the Yanx up by 7 in the division but Jeter is too immersed in his pre-game routine to come to the phone. And on the few occasions he will speak beyond the contractually obligated ones, there's a kind of practiced boring-ness to him: give them what they want without really saying anything of substance so they'll get trained not to expect much.

There's little chance Steinbrenner was even aware that statement was released. And really, the writers who print that shouldn't! Get a live quote from Hank or someone.

What is the issue here?..God decided it was Gehrig's time. It's useless to speculate what he could have done.

Are we expecting the press to report these events as we would like to hear them as Mets' fans?

Sure, especially considering that, if Jeter had played in Gehrig's time, he'd be banished from the Majors. Gehrig's still the better player six days a week and I disagree that Jeter will be the greatest or most accomplishest or such Yankee when he's finished..

Derek's dad is African-American, which makes him not "white" enough to qualify for Major League Baseball in the long era in between Moses Fleetwood Walker and Jackie Robinson --- which includes the duration of Lou Gehrig's career.

That speaks volumes about an organization where he's not even the best player for his position.

One of Slappy's few admirable qualities is that he never tried to adopt the "True Yankee" personna and that surely deserves at least a small measure of respect.

Like I said, give Jeter his due for owning the hit record.

The idea that this makes him better than Gehrig (or the other great Yankees) is garbage. That won't stop people from saying it though.

Yogi? Whitey? Mariano? Hell, Reggie Jackson gets considered "one of us" by Yankee fans, and Don Mattingly gets elevated greatly despite his lack of credentials comparable to Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle.

Also, 255 strikeouts from the Mick's MFY record. Nobody shows up and strikes out like the Captain.

All this means is that he played for one team for a long time. I'm more impressed that he's got more hits than any other shortstop.

But, here are some countdowns to look for: Jeter's also second on the all-time MFY list for strikeouts and times grounded into double plays.

And he's the team's all-time leader in outs made, and it's not even close. Jeter's got 6,288 and the person in second, St. Bernie Williams, has 5,919. Guess I missed Verducci's fawning when Jeter missed that mark.

Looking at the active leaders today, I was surprised that Pudge Rodriguez was so close to Jeter, with something like 2707, and Omar Vizquel was like four hits behind Pudge. Vizquel.s 42, so I don't see him getting to 3,000. Will be interesting to see if Rodriguez could hold on long enough. Seems like a stretch.
