What FK said and what really pisses me off is that the various media outlets don't even pretend to be partial , how many pages are the Daily News going to give to this chase on a daily basis. It's not a Mets jealousy for me either , at least the Snooze still sends it's beat writer to cover them, unlike the NYT.

One writer and I am sure it was Harper wondered aloud if Jeter could chase down Rose and then commended the Great One for scoffing at such nonsense ....see Harper loves to do that crap....

Thing is, Wright passing Kranepool will garner a blurb in the Game Notes section of the game stories.

If Wright (or any Met for that matter) does eventually get to whatever Jeter's final tally is, then we'd better hope that guy chasing that mark gets the soft rain treatment that Jeter is getting from the media.

If the Yankees club record was held by a guy like Roy White, this wouldn't be getting as much attention. It's more, I think, that it's a Lou Gehrig record that's about to be broken that's driving this mania. The hoopla is probably more (but not entirely) a reflection on Gehrig than it is on Jeter.

So last night I'm on the couch reading with the Mets game on , I check in with the MLB app on the nights scores and see that Jeter has three hits. A few minutes later I turn over to YES and catch it just as Jeter steps into the box for his AB that will surely make him the hits leader.

Michael Kay I have to admit set things up very nicely , in a rapid voice he recited all of Jeter's "firsts" in his career leading up to this point. For a second I was caught in the moment and was hoping he would get the hit , didn't care that he walked though.

So for me the moment has passed , last night would have been the night to do it with the build up of three hits yybbb

It's done with....got the hit int he 3rd...just watched it on the app.....looked like a bit of a damp squib to me . Teammates came to first base to greet him.

Nah, it was fairly well hit. Hard grounder to the right side - a very typical Jeter hit for the guy who long ago had the NYY [u:3n5b82hd]singles[/u:3n5b82hd] record.
That he gets (and deserves) praise from his teammates and the MFY crowd was never my problem; I just objected to what I saw as an attempt to make this into a record worthy of national celebration as if Yanqui records are more worthy than other team marks.

Overall, I'm not a big one for in-game and on-field celebrations, although this one was reasonably short and unobjectionable.

My final word on the whole Jeter/Gehrig deal:

I just flashed back to '95 and the time when Ripken was closing in on Gehrig's streak record. At the time a concept started to spread among some MFY fans and a few others that Rip Jr. should "honor" Lou by getting right up to his mark (either one game short or tie it - the details varied) and then sit out. "It's the right thing to do" became the mantra as if breaking the record he set would somehow dishonor him.

I wonder if Jeter should have "honored" him by ceasing to swing for hits ... or by retiring?
