Ichiro Suzuki singled in a ninth-inning run on Tuesday for a 4-3 win over Toronto. It was Suzuki's 1,953rd hit and, somewhat embarassingly, his first walk-offer.

Which player now takes over the dubious title of most hits by an active player without a walk-off hit?

Might it be ExtraSlappy hisself, Luis Castillo?

EDIT: Thumbs down on Castillo. Must disqualify myself-- found out the answer.

If you ask a Yankee fan its the Anti-Clutch himself, Alex Rodriguez.

My guess is the recently traded Jack Wilson, but only because the name is fresh in my mind.

Fewer hits than Castillo (1,772).

I like the slappy, leadoff-type approach to the answer. Juan Pierre?

Fewer also than Pierre (1,664).

Fewer still than Jack Wilson (1,158).

I know. Big gap there was between first and second.

how about our new buddy Angel Berroa?[/quote:2292idtu]

More hits than Angel Berroa (661). Besides, Angel Berroa has had at least one walkoff hit, and if you don't remember it, perhaps Art Howe does, as it was one day Uncle Art lost his shit.

Looking at the scrum, check out the semi-circular wraparound required for Ryan Rowland-Smith's name on his jersey.

His is believed to be the first hyphenated name to ever grace a big league uniform.

I remember when Rowland Smith was the Channel 2 news anchor.

MY guess -- Ryan Church?

Tough, gritty question. And each and every one of you, you're all thumbs.

Close to gametime, Edge... should I give 'em a hint?

funny I was thinking of David Eckstein earlier and you seem to be alluding to someone like that. or Alex Cora.

I was thinking Cora, I'm a little suprised if its him and he has less hits than Jack Wilson, I thought he'd been around longer.

Cora! Cora! Cora! is our man.

Our fill-in shortstop is our man with 742 hits, and no walkoffs. Hopefullly he can hit that monkey off his back this season, because there's a chance --- if Reyes comes back --- that he'll lose the title passively, as Hanley Ramirez is 46 hits behind him in second place. Nobody wants that.

Ichiro gets his second walk-off hit. This one is a homer off The Most Automatic Closer Evah[/quote:3fd6rgf3]

Nope, at least his third because he also had one in the 14th inning the previous night vs ChiSox.
Two walk-offs in a row, and I'm looking forward to #3

Great to see that walkoff dinger off of Mo. Especially after Francesa the shill, this past week, labeled Ichiro the player he'd call on if a SINGLE was needed.

I guess Hanley Ramirez's ship passed Cora's in the night and Hanley's the new leader.

Sometimes, good players on poor-to-mediocre teams (which Hanley has been for a good chunk of his career) won't ever get pitched to in a game-on-the-line situation.

Likewise, poor-to-mediocre players on good teams (which Cora has frequently been) will. So that reflects poorly on Alex. Although they will also find themselves pinch-hit for in those situations oft enough.

But who is going to pitch around Chip Ambres? Waddaya, yella?
