That was a great play an inning earlier though.
Gardner on 2nd, a semi-hard smash up the middle caused the pitcher to do one of those behind the back swipes. He didn't glove it but wound up smacking it directly back towards the plate. Mauer grabbed it and pumped towards 1st but he had no shot. Gardner sees the pump and keeps coming. Mauer saw him just in time and charged back towards the plate where he won the battle of the head-first dives.

Funky play, with all the chess pieces moving on the board, Zimmerman coming out from behind the pitcher and Johnson hitting the deck in front of him, I think Hernandez must've never realized Colome got the ball off until it was by him.

Either that or he thought Zim had the ball and his eyes were on the wrong guy.

(Actually, I might have exaggerated that over time. But I'll always recall that specific game as the beginning of this weird stretch the last eight or so years where the Mets light up the Randy Johnsons of the pitching world, but can't beat a guy just called up from AA.)

Definitely worse than the double-switch screw up that got Willie branded an incompetent boob during his 2nd day on the job. Also, it seems odd to me that this glitch didn't make Longoria ineligible for the game.

Both Longoria and Zobrist were listed on the lineup card as 3B but since Zobrist was the one to actually play the field in top 1 (Longoria was supposed to be the DH) pitcher Sonnenstine effectively replaced Longoria in the lineup and no DH was allowed. But Longoria did come in later to PH and stayed in the game as 3B (Zobrist moved to 1B) while the new pitcher replaced someone else in the lineup.
Meanwhile, Sonnenstine had an RBI 2B in his 3rd AB.

The team wouldn't be forced to play without a first baseman. I'm not sure why there's a different rule if it's the DH, although I think it has to do with some shenanigans (there's a word I don't use often) that Earl Weaver tried in the early days of the DH.

I'm sure it has to do with how the DH rule was set up in the beginning: as a position that was truly [u:b091c5ae22]designated[/u:b091c5ae22] for a hitter in place of a pitcher not as just another position that could be swapped around like one of the others. So if you then use the DH to go into the game, or list the pitcher and not a DH (what the Rays effectively did), you then lose the right to have a DH in that game.
Listing two 1Bs would be dumb but one of them could simply "switch" to 3B without penalty.

I'll have to see if I can find it. It had something to do with keeping his options open in case the opposing pitcher got knocked out in the first inning. He had found a way (if I'm remembering correctly) to exploit the rule so that he didn't have to choose his DH until the bottom of the first inning when the Orioles were at home.

It seems to me that, if that's your plan (and a thin edge that is), you can list your previous day's starting pitcher as your DH, and then pinch-hit for him the first time through the lineup.

I wonder how often he was able to do this before the rule was changed? I can see, if he was platooning at DH, this would allow him to delay whether to use his lefty or righty until the DH's turn at bat came around. And this would work for home games or road games.
