Who is this Piazza seems to have from behind?

An unscientific review says that the ugly-assed uniform that has apparently incited the Dodgers to fight appears to be a... Blue Jays toss-off? Rays? Mariners? That bulbous pate in the middle could belong to David Wells, but maybe that's Lou Pinella in profile on the left. But who would dress that ugly? At home?

I thought that was "Assenmacher" above Piazza, but he was never a Dodger. Is that Brett Butler in the middle?

They're on the road on what appears to be grass. Field turf had yet to be invented by 97 when he last played with LA, and that doesn't look like 90s Skydome or Kingdome turf. I thought it could have been an alternate Royals uni, but the hat don't match.

Retrosheet, here I come.

Man, I thought this was going to be an East Bound and Down Thread. I must have mullet on the brain.

The Dodgers did play two games against the Mariners in the Kingdome in 1997 (first year of interleague play), though I didn' t see any reference to a brawl in the game recaps. Reggie Smith and Dave Wallace were both on the Dodger staff that year, and Brett Butler was on the team as well.

No games against the Blue Jays, Royals, or Devil Rays that year.

I suspect it could be a spring training game (wouldn't be the only time Piazza got huffy in ST. See: Mota, G.).

Would explain why the Dodgers are playing the Jays and also the alternate unis.
Looks to be a Jays insignia just above "Wells". And behind that guy looks like Canseco.

After further review, it looks like Piazza is not coming in from behind. The uni numbers are on the right arm, and it look to me like the guy rolling around with Piazza is number 10...which would make him Dave Hollins.

Dave was the hitting coach for Binghamton in 2005.

What a clunky, Disney mess of a uniform package the Angels had when they first changed their name from California to Anaheim. The uniforms they're wearing in the brawl were alternates for one season before being dropped.

The other identifiable guys would be Darin Erstad (helmet, just up and left from Reggie Smith's left elbow), Jack Howell (between Erstad and Smith), and Billy Ashley ("AS" to the left of Pedro Astacio).

Can't find an account of it here, but otherwise find a lot of accounts of Dodgerfights.

Who said this about Mike Piazza: "Maybe he felt like he had to show off his testosterone. But this may be more embarrassing than the one before. Why would you go after skinny Guillermo Mota in spring training and do nothing to Roger Clemens in the World Series?"

I think I see Zeile in there too, in the center of the photograph, to the left of Dave Wallace's head.

="Frayed Knot":29sqw19f]I got Piazza, Dave Wallace, Pedro Astacio & CH Park[/quote:29sqw19f]

Looks like Luis Alicea neck-huggin Mr. Park on the right, there.

(Other future Mets on the Angels that year-- if not exactly viewable-- include Tony Phillips and RickeyBRickey.)
