One-year-Met challenge

Benjamin Grimm

The theme for this Mets trivia exercise is players whose entire Mets tenure took place within one and only one season.

Most seasons had at least one player who fit that criteria. The task here is to find, for each season, who the most prominent one-year Mets were. There will be one batter and one pitcher. "Most prominent" will be defined as most at bats for hitters and most innings pitched for pitchers.

We'll start with the position players. Please make no more than three guesses at a time and wait until your picks have been confirmed or denied before guessing again.

(Oh, and the 2008 guys may end up falling off the list if they play for the Mets in 2009. This list is "as of the moment" and may become outdated by Monday.)

Yes. And that has happened a few times.

Butler (1995), Dunston (1999) and Davis (1967) are all correct.

If yes, then Schneider.

Mantilla and Schneider are both correct and the top and bottom slots are now filled in. Heredia (2005) is not. (There will be a new answer for 2008 once Schneider appears in 2009, but for now he's the man.)

Upon edit: I see that my answer is both late and incorrect, by the criteria set forth to establish most prominant, but Church made better use of his at bats for better effect than did Schneider.

I've looked up the others and see one of my '72 answers that I erased (in favor of Lute Barnes) and my instinctual '77 guess (but I thought he was here more than one year) were correct. 2002 I knew I was drawing a blank on. 1965 showed up in a book I read recently. 1968 we could have sat from here to the next ballpark and I wouldn't have gotten it.

1995, Brett Butler. I'll never forget him taking his hat off to pose for the guy who ran on the field in the first game at Shea after the strike.

Yes. And that has happened a few times.

Butler (1995), Dunston (1999) and Davis (1967) are all correct.

Mantilla and Schneider are both correct and the top and bottom slots are now filled in. Heredia (2005) is not. (There will be a new answer for 2008 once Schneider appears in 2009, but for now he's the man.)

2008 - I'll vote for Ryan Church as having had a greater impact over fellow one year (to date) Mets Brian Schneider, Daniel Murphy, Nick Evans, and Fernando Tatis.

Upon edit: I see that my answer is both late and incorrect, by the criteria set forth to establish most prominant, but Church made better use of his at bats for better effect than did Schneider.

Desi Relaford was the man in 2001. I liked him and hated to see him get traded along with Shinjo. Besides the man could pitch, too.

Upon Edit: Damn, too slow once again as Edgy comes up with Desi first.

Mantilla and Schneider are both correct and the top and bottom slots are now filled in. Heredia (2005) is not. (There will be a new answer for 2008 once Schneider appears in 2009, but for now he's the man.)

How the hell did you get Leon Brown!?!?

And Tony Clark is correct too. So are Clines and Puig.

EDIT: Dick Schofield too.

I hate to think how few of these I would have gotten if I was playing this game. Aspromonte, probably. And Hebner and Davis.

Okay, time to flip the cards are reveal the answers. Good job everyone.

We'll be back on Monday to do the pitchers.

Do players who joined the team in 2008 and currently still on the team count as one-year Mets?

If yes, then Schneider.

felix Heredia got 327 at bats as a 2005 Met?

I don't think he even ate that many sunflower seeds as a Met.

Mantilla and Schneider are both correct and the top and bottom slots are now filled in. Heredia (2005) is not. (There will be a new answer for 2008 once Schneider appears in 2009, but for now he's the man.)
