Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 ... for the YanquisBombed out in game 2 vs Boston in a series where their manager flat-out stated beforehand they needed to take at least 2 of 3.And while they can claim injuries, they played a team with no Lowell, no JD Drew, no Lugo (OK, that might be an advantage for the Sawx), no Beckett, and of course no Manny. All hopes for the division were essentially dead already. Tampa won again today and now the Yanx are 10.5 out.So it's WC or bust for them -- but where the math really gets tough is that they need to catch both Boston AND the loser of the Twins/ChiSox race. It's one thing to play well down the stretch while the team in front of you stumbles. But having to catch fire and have several teams fall apart starts to get problematic. Today's action puts them 7 and 4.5 games behind Boston & Minny (6.5 in back of Chicago)
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 I so want them to be mathematically eliminated by the time they play that final game at Yankee Stadium 2.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 The great part is how people will be muttering about how A-Rod can only perform in blowouts.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 Seeing the length and money they are now committed to him, I'm thinking he's made his point that the Yankee culture is full of bum foolishness that can't appreciate the best player in the league unjustly playing out of position, right under their noses, night after night.I'm ready for him to start actually declining and being an actual albatross around their necks.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 Yeah, only 9.25 more years, Arod. Hang in there.Peeked in on the MFY game a few times and what looked like a tight one was suddenly a blowout.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2008 Author Posted August 27, 2008 The thing about ARod is that this season he actually is having a lousy clutch year despite good all around numbers. It's just funny listening to MFY fans yakking about it because:a) they think it's a permanent and untreatable condition since they believe 'clutchness' is supposed to be an acquired trait once one puts on the pinstripes they have such short memories that they can't seem to remember last year when he carried them on his back for most of the seasonc) they think it's their biggest problem
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 Yankees' tragic number is 21 for the division, 24 for the Wild Card.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 ARod should try to be like Jeter and just have a mediocre year all around.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2008 Author Posted August 28, 2008 ="Benjamin Grimm"]I so want them to be mathematically eliminated by the time they play that final game at Yankee Stadium 2.Or, better still, nathematically eliminated ON the final day at YSII
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 AND he should drive an Edge.I haven't seen an SNY telecast in almost three weeks now. Has that commercial resurfaced? Or have we managed to kill it off?

It would make for such a anticlimatic ending to the stadium. Players listless and not giving a damn. AAA'ers playing while the old guys sit.I think that would be funner to hear about.
Guest themetfairy Guests Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 MK and I saw the last few innings of this game on ESPN last night. Pure...Baseball...Porn!

Guest AG/DC Guests Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Boston's last game ever at YSII today.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 That was yesterday
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Hah. Now I can't read a schedule.Just bury me now. Aren't you supposed to have teenagers before you get this stupid?
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 MFYs blow a 6-2 lead thanks to a Cano error, then fail to tie it up in the 9th when Arod lines into a DP.Jays win 7-6.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 That GIDP by Rodriguez was his 11th this month , a MFY record.EDIT - Saw that just now on an ESPN scroll.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 And Roy Halladay beats the Yankees for the fourth time this year in the Jays' 6-2 win.The Yanks' two runs? Home runs from Slappy and Roids. Ain't nobody more clutch. They're now 7.5 out of the wild card, with Toronto (9.5) chomping on their asses and Minnesota (3.5) in the middle.Magic number is 20.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2008 Author Posted September 2, 2008 - Yanx managed to take their 11-2 lead and hold on for a 13-9 win ... but Boston's Monday night win still drops the tragic number (tragic for them not me) to 19- BP's playoff odds report drops them to [u:0ddd141fb7]under 1%[/u:0ddd141fb7] chance of reaching post-season (0.88%)- Mike Francesa pronounces them "Done"
Guest metsguyinmichigan Guests Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 I'm waiting for Fox and ESPN to trot out the "Yankees must be in the post-season" in their contracts. Woe! Think of all the hours spent preparing those "Farewell to the Stadium" montages they have no doubt prepared for those playoff game intros! If the Yankees don't make it, does Derek Jeter automatically get added to the roster of some team in the playoffs? Afterall, we've all been led to believe that the playoffs can't exist without the Cap'n!
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 ="Frayed Knot"]Mike Francesa pronounces them "Done"Now this worries me.Too many times when Francesa makes pronouncements, they're wrong.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 I've decided to give this developing story the no-hitter treatment until it comes to fruition, keeping my pleasure deeply contained and enveloped in paranoia.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 I'm with Bucket, but I'm seriously excited that we're on the cusp here.
Guest PiazzaFan411 Guests Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 ]Magic number is 20I feel like an idiot asking, but what exactly does that mean.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 That should have read "tragic number."It's the Red Sox magic number for eliminating the Yankees for the Wild Card. From Boston's perspective it's a "magic" number but for the Yankees it's a "tragic" number.
