That's a shame.

Murcer came into the big leagues in kind of a tough situation - as a switch-hitting SS-turned-CFer from Oklahoma who naturally, and unfairly, got touted as "the next Mantle".
But he eventually became very popular in his own right with a real good career even though he had virtually no chance to replicate the career of the Mick.

Along with Roy White, first Yankee I ever knew. I thought he was a pretty good broadcaster and always came off a super guy, too bad.

And, for youse kids too young to know, the hero of the game the night of Thurman Munson's funeral. Strange that channel 4 left that out.

Also strange --- although it may just speak to how old I've suddenly become --- is that they list him as "beloved broadcaster, ex-outfielder."

It's like Bud Harrelson passing (knock wood) and being remembered as "Ducks owner, ex-infielder."

I have a short list of Yanks I liked, he was one of them. RIP, Murcer.

I never had anything against Murcer. He was at the tail end of his career when I started seriously getting into baseball, and I remember he had lots of lines of stats on the back of his baseball card because he had been around for so long:

RIP, Bobby.

My glove, the only glove I've had since Juy 3, 1972, is a Bobby Murcer model. It wasn't until Lunchbucket threw me the old pepper one day that one of its laces was ruptured.

Spalding made a good glove and Bobby Murcer's name is on it.

RIP.

There was a woman at the Trenton Thunder game tonight wearing a Munson shirt. I'm sure it was in memory of Murcer.

memories of Bobby:

He was one of a line of shortstops the Yanks converted into centerfielders. The list included Mantle, Kubek, Tresh and Murcer.

The year the Yanks played at Shea, Murcer had a lousy year - only two home runs at home, and both of those came in September.

Seemed to be a nice guy.

Like many ballplayers who follow a great one, some Yankee fans didn't like him just because he was "replacing Mantle" (even though he didn't do it directly). But I also remember Yank fans initially not liking Mantle because he "replaced DiMaggio".

He suffered a lot.

RIP

I saw someone wearing a Bobby Murcer shirt this morning. I wonder if he was honoring Thurman Munson?
