Damn it!!! Troy Glaus hit one that even Beltran and Chavez couldn't catch.

That's only the fourth home run of the night for the Cardinals. Glaus has 2, Ankile and Duncan each have one. If they get to keep facing our pen, they'll likely get a fifth one.*

This game is a lot less fun suddenly.

*Upon edit: It's late, I'm tired and frustrated. The Cardinals won't need a 5th home run, since Glaus's shot was a walk off game winner. Another gut wrenching loss.

To have them battle back from 4-0 and 5-4 and have the bullpen piss it away is just unacceptable.

That game reminds me of everything we saw from mid-September on.

thats what happens when the SP lasts only 5 innings, though with the rain delay that may have been for reasons other than effectiveness. and give pedro a little bit of credit for mostly settling down (a solo shot was the only run off him after the first)

No, most of what we've seen from September on is not battling back from 4-0, or getting three early runs and letting the opposition back in the game.

It's not unacceptable except in the context of every loss being unacceptable, which is a position I can respect. Though absolutely horrible, to me, is more like a 9-0 loss to Sidney Ponson and the Yankees.

The offense showed up two games in a row, which is rare enough, against a top team. We could have easily had three more runs if Beltran hadn't been playing like a sucka. (I think he gave his uniform to his younger brother and let him play last night.) I can build on a game like this.

I watched the last three innings on TiVo-delay this morning before heading in to work.

Was very surprised to see Muniz given the ninth inning, especially with Pujols, Ankiel, and Glaus due up.

When he got the first two out, including a heart-in-the-mouth warning track catch by Beltran on Ankiel's drive, I was thinking he was actually going to get through it.

I guess not.

Even though two of the three hitters were righties, I might have gone with a more experienced Schoeneweis. But instead, even though it wasn't a "save situation" I might more likely have gone with Wagner. There probably wouldn't have been a more dire situation later in the game. Those were three tough hitters.

Fuck saves. In a game tied in the ninth I go with my top releiver every time unless there's a left-right mismatch or sometihng. And he better be prepared to pitch the tenth also.

That was more of a Wagner spot than a Muniz spot.

This is the first Jerry Manuel decision that I strongly disagree with.

That's what I was thinking. We lost the game with our best late-innings pitcher on the bench while sending a rookie out to pitch to the heart of their order.

The real failure was Feliciano. He has been the most atrocious reliever I've ever seen with a sub-3 ERA.

This is why I'm ready to argue that middle relievers are often more valuable than closers. At least they're pitching when the team needs them, save situation or not.
