Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Certainly the planet's most frustrating pitcher to watch.I checked into his game logs expecting to find some huge difference in BAA between the opening innings and the later ones -- but it's not really there: Innings 1-3: 60 Plate Appearences, 11 hitsInnings 4-6: 63 PAs, 15 hitsand he's given up all of [u:549808b108]2 XBHs[/u:549808b108] all season (1 HR, 1 2B), one early, one later. But the run differential is just 2 in the first 3 innings vs 9 (7 while he was pitching plus 2 of his scoring later) in innings 4-6 and the real culprit turns out to be his Ks & BBsInnings 1-3: 16 K - 5 BBsInnings 4-6: 8 K - 11 BBs... which is why he not only hasn't pitched past the 6th inning yet but has reached 6 full just once.Innings pitched in 5 starts:65.24.15.25.2In 3 of those games he's been pulled despite giving up no runs - twice in mid-inning.We're 2 - 3 in his five games.Fatigue? ... Brain-farts? ... Hot date on his mind?I dunno but it's something he/Rick have gotta figure out if he's ever going to be considered a front-end of the rotation starter.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 I don't think I'll be heartbroken if he leaves next year via free agency. I'd be content to replace him with someone with less spectacular stuff but with better consistency.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 I haven't been able to watch real closely but I wonder if he's staying consistent in his arm slot. IIRC from last year he tended to get wild when he started to drop down and throw from more of a sidearm angle.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 I don't hate Perez. I just don't think he's irreplaceable. And I haven't given Trachsel a second thought since he left the Mets. Are we supposed to be missing Steve Trachsel?

If OPS+ is the standard by which hitting ability is measured, then it would make sense for it to be the standard by which ability to prevent hitting is measured.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 (edited) As said above only 2 XBH's all year tho lotsa baserunners, so whatever the number is would be an Unusual split of OBA/SLG Edited April 25, 2008 by Guest

Are we supposed to be missing Steve Trachsel? It depends on which Trachsel we are talking about. Trax gave excellent value to the Mets in his first three seasons. The rest were an exercise in mediocrity. However most fans remember him for his gutless performance in Game 3 NLCS 2006.On edit: I meant his 2nd-4th seasons.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 I'm just trying to personify " less spectacular stuff but with better consistency."And, you know, stir it up. It's Friday.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Maybe a Rick Reed type?If the Mets replaced Oliver Perez with someone like Rick Reed, I don't think they'd be any worse off. A little less fun to watch, maybe, but they'd probably win as many games. And I'm not saying this is something they SHOULD do. Just that, if it happens that way, I won't be upset.

Guest attgig Guests Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 so, going by that... ollie should be a reliever? he can't maintain his concentration over many innings...maybe he should go to the pen. the heilman would be screaming for a start there.
