Vintage Maddux on display tonight as he went 7 shutout innings on only 75 pitches without walking a batter. Trevor Hoffman blew it in the 9th allowing a HR to Bengie Molina, they are tied in the 12th

Truly Vintage Maddux would have stuck around and finished what he started, no? Seventy-five pitches?

Maddux has been pitching short games (both innings & pitches) for a while now.

Trevor Hoffman is looking an awful lot like toast.

And it doesn't help that Sandy Eggo can't score so you figure they'll be in a lot of low-scoring, close games where a shut-down closer could be a real asset.

Not to be a grumpy old man, and I don't want to intefere too much in Bud Black's understanding with Greg Maddux, but it seems like the two main reasons to yank a pitcher are (1) the increased fatigue is causing you to lose velocity, and (2) the increased fatigue is heightening your risk of injury and compromising your future. Maddux has little velocity and his future is now and every win might well be his last, so you might as well secure them.

He still might have been vulnerable to (3) the increased fatigue is causing you to lose movement and (4) the increased fatigue is causing you to lose location. But it seems like (1) and (2) are above these in the hierarchy of when to pull a pitcher, and, after only 75 pitches (not quite three innings in Victor Zambranoland), he should at least get a chance to show those conditions were present.

What's the world coming to? I mean, doesn't he want to get a few more wins under his belt, whether for himself or for his team, or is it just about getting paid and getting home in time for the news?

Even when he was with the Braves there were rumors that he would ask out of games after six sometimes even five innings , yeah you would think that he would want to pitch deeper into games , I really have never liked the guy.

In SF, Ryan Freel singled to start the game, but Giants Pitcher Jonathan Sanchez has retired the next 16 batters. He's at 60 pitches through 5 2/3 after topping 100 in his last start (5 innings)...

and now Reds P Aaron Harang doubles to stop the streak.

Sanchez has twice struck out the side and has 7 K's-- all swinging.
