Farmer Ted Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 The man threw out the first pitch in Boston yesterday. Huge ovation from the crowd. Great move by the BoSox. He didn't deserve all the shit he got from the media and fans.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Maybe two worlds championships from now, plus one Opening Day, the Mets will do the same for Timo Perez and Armando Benitez.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 But will I name my dog Timo or Mando?Don't think so.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Bobby V used to say that Buckner had borderline HOF numbers , he would get quite worked up on the treatment Buckner received over the years, those two are great friends apparently.Great that Buckner went back and now I hope everyone else can put what happened behind them, he says he has a long time ago.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 What was the old Buckner joke?Something about the Mets team bus on its way to the World Series parade and driving through Buckner's legs.Anybody remember it?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Now will the Cubbies invite 'Bartman' back to throw out a first ball? The fans & media have even more reason to be ashamed of themselves over that one.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Start with the TV broadcasters who kept the camera on him.

At least that seems to be how it works.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 smg58 - "Bartman will be forgiven once the Cubs win. At least that seems to be how it works."So essentially, Bartman is destined to a lifetime as an unforgiven scapegoat.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Did anyone see the post game interview with Buckner where he was pretty much crying? And not tears of joy.Maybe he wasn't crying but he certainly was trying to force himself not to.Its really ashame what he had to go thru at the teeth of the media.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Here is Buckner introduced , a 3 minute standing ovation , very cool.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 It also shouldn't take two championships before it's deemed OK to let the guy off the hook. Now it's possible that the invite had been extended before this year but just taken up now, I don't know.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Buckner was invited a few times by this current Sox management , he had not been at Fenway since coming as a coach with the White Sox in 1997 , in fact he turned them down again this time but relented after a few days thinking about it.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 It's pretty easy to understand Buckner may have been hesitant to return to Fenway after all he has been through over the years. I think his legacy as a player has been permanantly tainted by one ill-timed miscue. I'm glad to see him finally receive his due from the Red Sox faithful. He may have finally been forgiven, but unfortunately for Buckner, his error is far from forgotten.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 According to the author of this outstanding piece, its not a matter of needing forgiveness from all but the worst of fans, but rather a need to share the good times with everyone who'd ever been a part of the others.http://cardboardgods.baseballtoaster.com/archives/945216.html

Guest AG/DC Guests Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 Buckner looks to be in pretty good shape for a first baseman who played the second half of his career on two bad ankles.
