Buckner

The man threw out the first pitch in Boston yesterday. Huge ovation from the crowd. Great move by the BoSox. He didn't deserve all the shit he got from the media and fans.

Bobby V used to say that Buckner had borderline HOF numbers , he would get quite worked up on the treatment Buckner received over the years, those two are great friends apparently.

Great that Buckner went back and now I hope everyone else can put what happened behind them, he says he has a long time ago.

What was the old Buckner joke?

Something about the Mets team bus on its way to the World Series parade and driving through Buckner's legs.

Anybody remember it?

Now will the Cubbies invite 'Bartman' back to throw out a first ball?
The fans & media have even more reason to be ashamed of themselves over that one.

Start with the TV broadcasters who kept the camera on him.

Bartman will be forgiven once the Cubs win. At least that seems to be how it works.

So essentially, Bartman is destined to a lifetime as an unforgiven scapegoat.

Did anyone see the post game interview with Buckner where he was pretty much crying?
And not tears of joy.

Maybe he wasn't crying but he certainly was trying to force himself not to.
Its really ashame what he had to go thru at the teeth of the media.

It also shouldn't take two championships before it's deemed OK to let the guy off the hook.

Now it's possible that the invite had been extended before this year but just taken up now, I don't know.

Buckner was invited a few times by this current Sox management , he had not been at Fenway since coming as a coach with the White Sox in 1997 , in fact he turned them down again this time but relented after a few days thinking about it.

It's pretty easy to understand Buckner may have been hesitant to return to Fenway after all he has been through over the years. I think his legacy as a player has been permanantly tainted by one ill-timed miscue. I'm glad to see him finally receive his due from the Red Sox faithful. He may have finally been forgiven, but unfortunately for Buckner, his error is far from forgotten.

Buckner looks to be in pretty good shape for a first baseman who played the second half of his career on two bad ankles.
