So I've got WFAN on in the office and I'm tolerating Mike Francesa & Russo

They have spent the afternoon debating whether or not Joba Chamberlain showed up the Blue Jays the other night after doing, not a single, but a double fist pump after striking someone out.

Callers are weighing in with their opinions. I'm hearing about the classy-ness of the Yankees, Manny Ramirez posing at the plate, Joe Torre not caring for ARod screaming 'HA!' KRod on the Angels. Should Joba pump his fist? Maybe Jetah should say something to him! Yadda yadda yadda.... Torture.

That went on for a good 2 hours.

Now they have Rick Majerus on. Majerus started talking about baseball and brought up George Will's 'Men At Work' and how he loved that book. Mainly because it talked about the strategy of the sport not the crap that so many other people focus on thats not important.

Majerus: 'That's why when I'm in the area I like listening to you guys because you guys don't deal with that extemporaneous crap.'

Francesa: 'Yeah, we don't do that all.'

I'm not at all surprised by Francesa's lack of self-awareness.

I'm not familiar at all with Rick Majerus. Either he's a fool, or a kiss-up.

I dunno. I'm not listening so I can only imagine how dumb M&MD are right now, but I find myself more sensitive to the death of sportsmanship than just about every fan.

I saw that play and would say if I didn't know better that the K won the world series for the MFYs instead of being the last out in the 8th inning of the first game of the year. It shouldn't cause Frank Thomas to go after him with a bat, but he make take his time rounding the bases the next time he goes long on him.

My other thought is baseball is a very humbling game and Joba has humbling coming.

Me, I enjoy radio so much more now that I've abandoned WFAN (I've been clean for almost three years now!) and switched to NPR.

NPR might not be to everyone's taste, but there are SO many radio stations out there, even without satellite. It shouldn't be hard to find something that's less frustrating, infuriating, and mind-numbing than Mike and the Mad Dog.

Majerus is a college basketball coach that they had on to talk about the tournament.

My issue was not so much the merits of what they were discussing but more what Grimm says - Francesa just spent 2 hours talking about a guy pumping his fist and then basically dismisses someone who would spend 2 hours discussing something like that.

I like listening sports talk for the most part, don't have satellite in the office and the ESPN signal is a bit static-y. Besides the fact that Michael Kay is on opposite M&MD.

Majerus is a long-time friend of Francesa from the days when he was heavily involved in covering college hoops so it's not a surprise that he'd be complimentry.
But, of course, this isn't really about that so much as it's about Francesa's self-image of staying above the fray which makes it prime tee-off material for Mushnick.

What I always get a kick out of is that M&MD always make a point of saying how they don't read or pay attention to the likes of Mushnick or his cohorts like Raissman, Best or Sandomir ... but never fail to notice when they're a subject of their columns.

Heh, I forget where exactly, but on some board, clearly a Yankee-hating board (I don't think it was here) I read a post where the poster claimed he saw a lot of Armando Benitez in Chamberlain.

I'm sure that was in the he is too excitable and could lead to some epic meltdowns once things go bad for him.

How does one melt down once things go bad. Aren't they the same thing?

Not to read into what another poster was thinking, but I'm sure they meant in the snowball effect where the pitcher will blow the lead, and then give up another couple of runs to put the game effectively out of reach for the team's offense in the bottom half of the inning.

It's bad enough that the pitcher gives up the go ahead run, but just couldn't nail the final out(s) and keeps giving up runs to the point where it would be difficult for the team to come back to eventually tie or win the game. I think that is what "epic meltdown" meant.

I forget exactly who it was that said it though, but again it was probably more out of Yankee-Hate than actual observation of Chamberlain's makeup and demeanor on the mound.
