An almost-hero returns. Prediction: shortly after this post, a joker is going to start a new "Mets Re-Sign Martinez!" post. $35 Crane Pool on it.

reached a minor league deal with Livian Hernandez[/quote:zpcjnwwi]

Well, he does have a lifetime .233 BA with 9 HR. Maybe he can be the righty bat off the bench.

Seems like Livan has been forever rumored to be coming to the Mets.

Got to get realistic. I actually never had Garcia ahead of Redding, but we've got to consider Livan the favorite at this point. Paddy Power does.

I guess that one benefit of the WBC will be that the Mets will be able to see all those guys in camp in real games while many of the regulars are representing their respective countries in the tourney.

Really, Edge: Redding as a long man/spot starter loses out to Muniz-as-I-don't-know-what?

Not sure I see it.

My experience is the Mets haven't been carrying spot starters, so I assembled the most likely bullpen comprised of relief pitchers, but, yeah, that should be subject to review.

Redding hasn't pitched yet, stuck in port with back discomfort. Making a statement in hit-or-miss position is Darren O'Day, with 3.1 scoreless so far. Nelson Figueroa is also scoreless over three innings.

O'Day has looked good, and has the Rule 5 thing going for him... but he's a similar-style guy to Green, no? (Sidewinding, ROOGYish righty.)

I really, really want Rocky Cherry. He intrigues... and his name's Rocky Cherry.

Aren't they still paying Bobby Bonilla $1 million per year?
And, I didn't add up your numbers about the current salary level. But I thought I read a while ago (couldn't find a link) that club contributions to health insurance, etc. are added to a team's salary for porposes of calculating whether or not they pay the tax.

Why is Hernandez projected to make the team but not Redding? I thought Redding was on a ML deal and on the 40-man.

Because at the time I posted that, he was out-pitching and out-healthing Redding. Guaranteed money means something, not everything.

Fair enough, sir... but he's still gots to be on the 40.

On the other side of the ball... D'ya think Nick Reginald is changing minds at all with the tape-measure numbers? Or is his hitting getting lost in the surprisingly-strong OF benchwarmers shuffle?

Redding does need to be on the 40. That is so.

I think Evans will get a good look, but is not the current favorite.

Adam Rubin has projected the Opening Day roster. He thinks that Livan will be called up when needed which creates an opening on the bench. I put Keilty in the Evans spot from the start and either O'Day or Cherry instead of Parnell as the Mets keep one of the Rule V guys.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Starters:
Brian Schneider, c
Carlos Delgado, 1b
Luis Castillo, 2b
David Wright, 3b
Jose Reyes, ss
Daniel Murphy, lf
Carlos Beltran, cf
Ryan Church, rf

Rotation:
Johan Santana, lhp
Mike Pelfrey, rhp
Oliver Perez, lhp
John Maine, rhp

Bench:
Ramon Castro, c
Alex Cora, if
Fernando Tatis, if/of
Marlon Anderson, of
Jeremy Reed, of
Nick Evans, 1b/of

Bullpen:
Francisco Rodriguez, rhp
J.J. Putz, rhp
Sean Green, rhp
Pedro Feliciano, lhp
Brian Stokes, rhp
Bobby Parnell, rhp
Tim Redding, rhp

Note: Livan Hernandez is the fifth starter, but because he's on a minor-league contract, the team will be able to wait to purchase his contract until Game 5 or 6, when they want to first use him. That would allow Evans to be on the bench as a righty bat for the first week. Why Evans and not Bobby Kielty? Evans can be optioned to the minors and is already on the 40-man roster; Kielty would need to clear waivers once being added to the 40-man roster.

The thing is... if Parnell gets sent north to Buffalo*, is he going as a starter or as a reliever? From what I hear/read, the scuttlebutt last year/spring is that he was getting used to going "all out" for 30 pitches or so and still being able to locate fastballs at 97... if the spring's results are indicative, it seems like he could use some work on that yet. (Since, as a starter, he was the sort of guy who threw in the low 90s and conserved his "gas.")

*Since the New Orleans-to-Buffalo made New York the home of Mets minor league ball, won't EVERYONE who isn't staying in XST or low-A technically be "coming north with the team"?

With Kunz farmed out and Sanchez released, even guys on the 40 be feeling the heat. Guys you might have thought would go before the Kunzer: Ruelas, Snyder, Switcher (don't know the difference between those two yet), and Abreu. Hang in there, Michel.

from Rotoworld:
The Mets have shut down Tim Redding indefinitely due to a lack of shoulder strength.
That should take him out of the running for the club's fifth rotation spot. Mets GM Omar Minaya said Redding isn't injured, but simply needs to build up more strength. He's posted a dreadful 40.50 ERA in two starts this spring.

While I have to hope that's not $2M straight out the window, Redding is not going to be on the Opening Day 25. So one starting spot and two bullpen spots are very wide open at this point.

Five things about Fernando "My God, You Are So" Nieve:

1) A live arm, he sits at 94-97 MPH, but claims he used to be able to go up to 99. I don't know if used to means "before surgery," "before I left Venezuela," or "before I woke up."

2) Hails from Puerto Caballo ("Horseport"), cradle or Carlos Zambrano, as well as Ronny Cedeo and others.

3) Spent Hurricane ike in a Luxury Suite at Minute Maid Park. Life is good even on the fringes of the big leagues.
4) Signed with the 'Stros at 16 and has been in the organization for 10 years.

5) He likes 'em waify. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/s.php?init=q&q=fernando%20nieve&ref=ts&sid=0c383ee8a8c0b864cd2716e8358ac3d7

Was just wondering about Fernando-- thanks for the Nie-uggets.

Also, get the man some Breathe-Right: As per BP 2009, he was diagnosed with a severely deviated septum last year. (After missing most of the 2007 season following Tommy John surgery.)

Five things about "Way Cool "Junior" Spivey:

1) A 2002 All Star.

2) That same year --- 14th in MVP voting, Baby.

3) Won a World Series with the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks, though he didn't appear in any of the Series games. No matter, just being on that Yankee-killing roster makes him a Real American Hero.TM
4) His career began to hit the pisser (he's already retired once) in 2005 when he broke his wrist... with the Nationals... in practice... hitting off a tee.

5) In a 2006 lost season, he was signed by the Cards, benched by the Cards, demoted by the Cards, benched by the Redbirds, and, finally suspended by the Redbirds.

Just guessing here, but Nieve may be the only Met to hail from Carabobo, Venezuela.

Yep... but Carlos Zambrano was born in the same place. (Puerto Cabello/Carabobo)
