]MLB Rumors - New York Mets Why not Haren in New York rotation?
Sunday, Nov 11, 2007 8:26 am EST

The New York Mets need pitching. The New York Mets have young outfielders who could bring a strong arm to Queens and it doesn't have to be Johan Santana.

The New York Post reported Dan Haren could be had for the right price. Will the Mets be willing to pay it? Rumor is, Oakland A's GM Billy Beane loves Lastings Milledge. Aaron Heilman is another potential bargaining chip.

Haren and Santana each had 15 wins this past year. Haren (76) allowed fewer earned runs than Santana (81) as he posted the third best ERA in the AL at 3.07. Santana was seventh (3.33). Haren surrendered 24 home runs while Santana gave up 33.

Haren is one of the best young pitchers in BB. I'd give up the farm for him.

I just hope we don't get duped and wind up with Harden, only for his arm to go all kablooie on us.

You never know with pitchers, Haren's arm could go kablooie too.

The same exact rumor came up last year and Beane said Haren wasn't going anywhere. Not sure why he would change his mind now.

From Rotoworld:
A's GM Billy Beane is contemplating whether to go into 2008 with his current core or begin rebuiding. He expects to decide by the winter meetings.
If the A's opt to blow it up, Joe Blanton, Alan Embree, Mark Kotsay, Dan Johnson and Kiko Calero would be marked for trade and Dan Haren, Rich Harden, Eric Chavez, Mark Ellis and Bobby Crosby could also become available. Beane would like to know more about the health of players like Harden, Chavez, Kotsay and Justin Duchscherer before deciding. "That's why we're at a fork in the road," Beane said. "We're either going forward and going for it or cutting it down and rebuilding. There is no middle ground in our market. When we hit the bottom, small market teams like us don't bounce."

That's about as candid as I've seen a GM get. Personally I think there's too much talent in his pitching staff to mail it in, but you never know. Any addition to the number of quality pitchers on the block would be good for the buyers, and Haren and Blanton would certainly qualify.

Dealing Heilman and Milledge would create two needs on the major league level, though, so I'd prefer to deal from the farm system. Plus, I'm not sure Blanton wouldn't be the better value of the two.

This leads me to what I have been thinking about for days. If they really want to make a trade for Haren or some other legit top of the rotation starter, I think that they have to make some FA signings in other areas to set up a package to get it done (much like a football team will use the run to set up the pass or how a pitcher will use an one type of pitch to set up for another type).

I think that, to make a deal of this type, it is going to take:

a) Milledge or Gomez
B) One (and possibly two) of Pelfrey/Humber/Mulvey
c) Maybe even Heilman

It's gonna cost, so they better use free agency to fill in the gaps beforehand. They are going to need an rightfielder (to replace Milledge or Gomez. . .I like the idea of Fukudome as I have already stated in that thread), a back-end starter (to compete with who is not traded among the aformentioned three young rightys), and bullpen help (which we need already but even moreso if Heilman is going in a package).

i'm really not sold on gomez so if someone else can be, I'm game for parting with him. Milledge is going to be an average or above average major leaguer, whether or not he blossoms into being a star i don't know, but I certainly reckon he's far more likely to have long term value then Gomez
