Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 ...he'd say that he's not interested in returning to the Yankees. And you know what, it occurs to me that I posted this same sentiment a year or two ago, the last time the Yankees left him twisting in the wind. But I think it's even more true now. He's likely to get fired. He doesn't need the money. He should step aside before they fire him. The old, "You can't fire me! I quit!" maneuver. He must be addicted to the pinstripes or something.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 There's something to be said for that, but even if I 'don't need the money', millions of guaranteed dollars and fame is a lot to walk away from.Would he get other offers? Sure but this is the Yankees and this is New York.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Or he could take the viewpoint that quitting takes them off the hook.By not quitting he forces the brass to publicly announce that THEY are the reason he's not still Yanqui manager.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 But he's out of contract so he can't be fired , they just won't bring him back I suppose, or they'll make him a contract offer. I agree that he should tell them to stick it.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Crazy thing is, he's not going to be "fired." They're just not going to re-sign him. Same thing, different thing.I agree with Yancy; I'd think it'd be tempting to retire and move on, since he's already unattached for '08 anyway. He's probably a HOFer by now, and he might as well enjoy himself. But it's gotta be tempting to be so close to a WS title.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 What drove me crazy is two of his most loyal aides-de-camp walked out publickly declaring their distaste for how the Yankees treat Torre, but he stuck around.Yeah, they were on the outs anyway, but they sure burned their bridges.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Torre's made it pretty clear that he doesn't want to retire, that he'd like to manage more providing the right situation presents itself. If he were to proactively declare himself out of the NYY pool of candidates he'd be doing a favor (IMO) to those who - despite the continuing string of playoff appearances - seem bent on cutting him loose."Hey he walked away from US ... WE don't have any blood on our hands"
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2007 Author Posted October 10, 2007 You know, I'd be okay with him as Willie's bench coach, but if he still wants to manage, what options might be available to him? St. Louis? Pittsburgh? Are there any other teams who will be manager shopping this winter? (Does Seattle have a manager for next year?)

Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Torre could wait for the Yankees to hire LaGenius Larussa, who is campaigning for the job, then take his spot as manager of the Cardinals.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Actually, Torre to the Cards makes a ton of sense.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 18, 2007 Author Posted October 18, 2007 I guess he does have an ounce of self-respect.It just took him a while to dig it out.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 good for Torre, a 1 year deal at less than he was making with an option that only vested if he made the world series is INSULTING. i hope he gets a better contract from the Cardinas or something
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 18, 2007 Author Posted October 18, 2007 You heard it here first: Willie Randolph's bench coach.(I'm not predicting that it will happen, just that it will be speculated.)
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Good for Torre. I hope he told Steinbrenner to go sit in his own feces.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 18, 2007 Author Posted October 18, 2007 Maybe he's been drinking it.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 I enjoyed hearing John Kruk and Carl Ravitch on ESPN ripping the Yankees for playing public relation games in offerring Torre an insulting contract. Kruk in particular, ripped the Steinbrenner's (dad and two sons) for being disengenuous in their dealings with Torre. To paraphrase and summarize Kruk: After 12 seasons, 12 playoff berths, 6 ALCS titles, and 4 World Series titles Torre deserved to receive a legitimate offer with at least 2 years gauranteed from the Yankees. The offer one year deal with incentives offered by the Yankees was little more than a public relations ploy. The Yankees offered the deal knowing that Torre would never accept it only so they could claim that they had tried to sign Torre, but he rejected their offer.
