As you may or may not know, the 11th Star Trek film, simply entitled "Star Trek", is coming out in December 2008. The film will be a sort of reboot of the original series, with new actors playing Kirk, Spock, etc. However, Leonard Nimoy will be returning as an older Spock. J.J. Abrams (Lost, Mission: Impossible III) is directing. The following cast members have been confirmed:

Spock: Zachary Quinto
Older Spock: Leonard Nimoy
Chekov: Anton Yelchin

The remaining characters (Kirk, Bones, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura) have yet to be cast.

I think the Star Trek franchise needs to rest for 15-20 years to regain freshness. I loved Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation, but they've really just beat it to death the past 10 years or so.

count me out on this movie, recasting the original series? ughh

btw, anyone who didn't realize it and cares, star trek episodes are available for download on iTunes (along with plenty of other shows) for 1.99 an episode (with a slightly reduced rate for buying a whole season at once)

I actually liked DS9 alot more than TNG. "In the Pale Moonlight" was easily my favorite episode of any star trek series. Voyager was mostly crap though (thank god they replaced that ugly girl with Jeri Ryan) with a few good episodes thrown in.

it had a continuous story line rather than a bunch of random episodes that could almost be shown in any order, which i liked.

The Next Generation is the series that all other ST series should be measured against, IMO.

Recasting TOS? Only... Bill... Shatner... can play... James... T... Kirk....

I know remakes are all the rage, but wasn't the last Trek movie with the original cast like 10 years ago? 15? Can't someone write a new fucking story?

That's what they're doing with this movie. It takes place before the original series began, therefore they have to cast young actors to play the roles. The scuttlebutt is that the story will focus on the crew first meeting each other (particularly Kirk and Spock), possibly the first mission of the Enterprise after Kirk becomes Captain, or the events that lead him to be named Captain. All of these parts require actors in their 20's or early 30's (with the exception of Chekov, who I believe is being played by an 18-year-old).

I thought it was obvious that I meant a completely new story with new characters. Writing a new chapter with new actors and placing the time line before the previous story is not brand new material.

I guess everything always has to be spelled out.

i think they tried the "brand new material" thing with 'Enterprise' and it lasted only 3 poorly-watched seasons. willets is right, its time for them to take some time off.
the TOS actors have gotten too old for anything and most people (i'd guess) don't want to see replacements. TNG has gotten stale and i hated the last movie. Voyager ended when the series ended, a movie with that cast would be nothing like the series and pretty pointless imo. DS9 doesnt need a movie either.
i'd just give the whole thing a rest for awhile after Enterprise's failure.

"Brand new material" means no Star Trek.

Enterprise was not brand new material.

Jesus, I'm spelling out some more

Well, they may have cast a new Captain Kirk.

Actor Chris Pine is currently in talks to play Captain James T. Kirk in the upcoming Star Trek movie. However, he has to decide between this role and a supporting role in a new George Clooney film, as the shooting schedules overlap.

Also, Eric Bana has been cast as the villain in the film.

Chris Pine signed the contract today to play Captain Kirk. The only role yet to officially fill is that of Dr. McCoy, but that seems to be a formality at this point as Karl Urban has been cast and all that is left is for him to sign his contract. When Urban signs on, your new crew will be:

Chris Pine as James T. Kirk

Zachary Quinto as Spock

Karl Urban as Leonard "Bones" McCoy

Simon Pegg as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott

John Cho as Hikaru Sulu

Zoe Saldana as Uhura

Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov

Also confirmed for the film are Leonard Nimoy as old Spock and Eric Bana as the villain. Reports are currently that William Shatner is not in the film right now, but I seriously doubt he won't end up in the film. The film's plot reportedly deals with time travel and alternate timelines, so speculation is that Nimoy's older Spock saves Shatner's Kirk from his death that occurred in Star Trek Generations, allowing Shatner to appear in the film at the very end. The captain of the Enterprise before Kirk, Christopher Pike, will also be in the film, as well as Kirk's parents.

the new guy playing McCoy is the only one who, imo, looks believable as a younger version of the character. especially bad is the guy playing Sulu where the resemblance to George Takei seems non-existant

i suppose that depends on how big a trekkie you are, but either way i don't think its a bad idea to try and find reasonable look-alikes.

Chekov didn't get stationed on the Enterprise until season two anyhow, right?

So, I guess he's in the movie sending e-mails to Uhura?

In Wrath of Khan, Khan says that he recognizes Chekov, when the episode Khan was in was during the first season. So for all we know, Chekov was in the bathroom the whole first season. There were over 400 people on the Enterprise, anyway.

In the brig, perhaps, harrassing Khan.

[Trekkie Speak]Yabut in episode...AH Great Bird of the Galaxy I can't remember which, they do reference Chekov as starting pretty much when Koenig debuted. [/Trekkie Speak]

Not kidding, there is some obscure reference somewhere, like McCoy or Spock rattling off a star date or some other darn thing that canonizes Chekov NOT being anywhere on the NCC-1701 at the time of the "Space Seed" episode in Season 1.

New trailer that was just released yesterday. The ending differs from the one in the trailer that is being shown with Quantum of Solace, and is much, much, much cooler, IMO:
