Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 Jose Reyes has recently made it an even 30 Mets who have lasted long enough in the blue & orange (and occasionally black) to amass 2,000 NYM ABs.To date, among those 30, his career "walk rate" of .040 (the diff between his OBP and BA) is lower than all except for Doug Flynn's .030 - although I guess we can take solace in the fact that it's improving all the time now.Which Met, among the other 28, has the highest rate? (and it's not particularly close)
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 Olerud probably didn't get enough AB's.Keef?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2007 Author Posted May 27, 2007 Straw = 3rd (.096)Keith (probably would have been my guess) is tied for 6th with Buddy Harrelson at .090Olerud's 3 seasons were not enough to get him 2K ABs
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2007 Author Posted May 27, 2007 Mazzilli is 5th at .093* Now starting, Game 3 of the 1969 World Series: Gary Gentry
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 I'm out. I looked up my second guess, and he seems untoppable.

He had a consistent lousy BA, and he walked a lot.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2007 Author Posted May 27, 2007 I should have mentioned HoJo before since he is tied with Keith & BuddyThink away ... will be back tonight
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 I thought ira would be the one to get it.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 Yup. 'Twas my second guy. Damn. I would've been big had I guessed right the first time. Big, I tell ya.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 I'll take a shot at it. Disregarding the players that have already been guessed, I'll go with Edgardo Alfonzo as my first choice. My second guess would be Rusty Staub.

Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 I've been giving this a lot of thought this evening. I have a feeling that the player we're searching for didn't hit for a very good average. I wouldn't be surpised if we're looking for a player with a career batting average in the .240-.260 range. That being said, I think Willets' guess of Dave Magadan is a good choice. Though he hit for a pretty high average (which goes against my theory) he was a pretty patient hitter that didn't chase many bad pitches. He didn't have much power, but he always seemed to be on base.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 I got Mags too but doubt he got 2K ABs.
Guest SI Metman Guests Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 I'm guessing Kong could be it. He had a low average, and I'm sure he got walked now and then because of the power threat.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2007 Author Posted May 28, 2007 Good choice with Magadan who just barely got his 2K NYM ABs ... but he came up just short.]. I have a feeling that the player we're searching for didn't hit for a very good average. I wouldn't be surpised if we're looking for a player with a career batting average in the .240-.260 range.Or even lower.1----.1112Magadan.0993Strawberry.0964----.0945Mazzilli.0936THernandez.0906THarrelson.0906THoJo.0909----.08310TStaub.08210T----.08212TPiazza.07712T----.07714Alfonzo.07515T----.07015T----.07017Kingman.06818----.06719----.06520----.06221TMcReynolds.05921T----.05923TKranepool.05523T----.05525----.05126----.04827----.04528----.04229Reyes.04030Flynn.030
Guest iramets Guests Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Oh. Now I get Edgy's thrust. (I think he had a BA below .240)
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 The more I thought about it, it just made sense we were looking for a pretty weak stick that had a good eye and was patient at the plate. Great, so now all we need to do is think of a poor hitter that garnered at least 2000 at bats for the Mets.Rey Ordonez would certainly qualify on the low average and ample playing time, but he was so pathetic offensively that he didn't even draw walks with much regularity. Another weak hitting shortstop would be Rafael Santana, but I doubt he was with the Mets long enough to compile the required 2000 at bats.Ooh, ooh, I think I have a good shot at it. How about Ron Hodges? He was with the Mets for an eternity and he never did hit for much of an average.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Hodges is a good guess, as he would be second on that list with .102, but he didn't garner 2,000 at-bats. He didn't even reach 1,500.But you did well, clearly recalling the words from "Wouldn't It Be Nice?"It's nice when you're a catching lefthand batterAnd you have a decent OBP
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Wow, Ron Hodges was a Met for more than 10 years and he still didn't garner 1,500 at bats? That's an awful lot of splinters he collected over the years.
