seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Story]"I think we are the team to beat in the NL East -- finally," shortstop Jimmy Rollins said Tuesday. "But, that's only on paper."The New York Mets cruised to the division title last season, finishing 12 games ahead of the Phillies. But Philadelphia overcame a poor start and a midseason roster purge to take the lead in the NL wild-card standings with only one week remaining in the regular season, only to fall short for the second straight year. Now, the Phillies are quite confident they'll make the playoffs for the first time since 1993.General manager Pat Gillick strengthened an already-solid starting rotation by adding Freddy Garcia and Adam Eaton in the offseason, and made minor moves to bolster an offense that led the league in runs scored."For the first time since I've been here, I can say I know we have the pitching to get us there," said Rollins, a three-time All-Star in six seasons in the majors. "Our offense has been productive the last couple years, but it's tough when it's 6-0 in the third inning."I love how one paragraph talks about how solid their pitching staff is, then Rollins complains that they're down 6-0 after three innings every time. I think you gotta beat the Mets a little bit before you start talking smack, dipwad.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 There's still the Charlie Manuel factor......looking at the Phillies roster it's not bad at all though..
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Everybody's an optimist in January. But Garcia's not a sure bet to rebound, Victorino as a full-time rightfielder doesn't scare me, and Eaton might not be an upgrade for their AAA rotation. I don't see how they make up twelve games on us.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 moyers is 44, and Lieber isn't far behind. We on the other hand only have ONE old, soft-tossing lefty. Garcia is mediocre and Eaton aspires to be. But the wife-beating Myers is the real deal, and Cole Hamels waits in the wings, with huge upside. While that pitching staff doesn't impress me, neither does ours. So we're going to have to outslug them. Which isn't a sure thing.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Hamels is an important factor.I'd rather have Pelfrey and Humber on deck than Hamels with his 120 innings of experience. But that's a key head start in trying to sort out what each team is going to get this year.Hamels could throw 200 this year, and P&H not 100 between them. I'm hoping for one to be ensconced in the rotation before the All Star Break, but both were sent home from the AFL.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Fortunately for us, Cole Hamels is a wildcard in that he drinks and parties too much. He recently married ex-Survivor skank/Playboy model Heidi from a few years back.I think the Phillies are very capable of playing better than us this year.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Hamels is probably a better bet than either of our guys, and thats not a knock on them.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Probably a better bet than either, but not necessarily a better bet than both.

soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 That was the tamest shot of the batch that I came across.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Look at those long freaky toes on the brunette though. Yecch.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 I could overlook that.

Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 The real deal as pitcher or wife-beater?
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 A lot of what Rollins says his true, except of course his main statement. You're never the team to beat until you win. He's probably not bright enough to understand that.

Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 could every body just shut up for a minute, so soupy can post more pictures!
Guest iramets Guests Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 May I interject that I'm offended by this exploitive photo of horribly deformed Siamese twins, so obviously fused at multiple points on their bodies that they've never even been able to get dressed? Although I suppose that, purely in the interests of medical science, perhaps we could tolerate just one more such photograph.
