The Mets are calling...

I just got a phone call from the New York Mets! They want me to play second base for them next year! They'll pay me $5 million! Plus incentives!

Okay, that's not really why they called. They actually want me to buy a seven-game season ticket package. I declined, since I don't live close enough to Shea to attend seven games in a season. If the package gave me a shot at post-season tickets I might have been tempted. I figure I could probably attend three or four and sell off the rest. But to get guaranteed playoff tickets you need to buy, at a minimum, either the all-Saturday plan or the all-Sunday plan. And, of course, the Mets have to qualify for post-season play.

Yancy, are you over 40 years old? You can probably get a multi-year deal.

Yes, I am. In fact, I'll be 44 in May. I should be able to get at least two years.

For what it's worth, buyers of the seven-game packages (it was 8 last year) *did* get a postseason purchase option. I believe it was up to 4 tickets for one game of the NLDS or one game of the NLCS.

Of course, it was something that the Mets did as a reward to the 8-pack holders -- it's never been guaranteed with those 7 or 8 ticket packages they offer each year.

going in to last season where would the Mets executives have put the chances of a playoff berth? 40%? where would they put it now? 75%? with the playoffs looking more likely than this time last year the Mets aren't as eager to promise playoff seats as an incentive to buy ticket packages.

I think you misunderstood my post. They've never guaranteed postseason purchase options with the 7 or 8 packs. They wound up offering it last year as a reward.

Do you really think the 2007 Mets have a greater chance (35%!) of making the playoffs than the team that started 2006?

I can beat that.

And I can switch hit-I'm just as good from both sides.

i think that the perception of their chances has changed that much, yes. everyone this offseason has talked as if the Mets will be in the playoffs again. last offseason we were talking about hoping to contend.

I got an email about the 7-pack.
Does anyone know if/when single game tickets go on sale? I went to the web site, and was slightly confused. It looked like some games had tickets for sale and others not.

I think they are trying to sell upper reserves for crap games in advance.... Seems like a good deal till you're faced with a per-ticket service charge.

Last few years the single-game tixx went on sale on a cold Sat. or Sunday morning in late February... they do little promotion of it. I think I'll try to go again this year!

Back in the 1980's, when I did most of my game attending, tickets always went on sale on March 1, no matter what day of the week it was.

I'd make an annual pilgrimage to Shea to stand on that line to get Opening Day tickets.
