Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Buster Olney on espn sez:Mets are "on the verge of signing free-agent pitcher Scott Schoeneweis to a three-year deal"Schoenweiss is a 33 y/o LH reliever.Works a lot, had a coupla good seasons w/the Angels but has looked more or less ordinary recently. Not quite sure I get the point in this one - particularly over the supposed multi-year committment.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 thats lame, if we were going to give 3 years to a reliever we should have brought Bradford back.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 I don't like Omar giving relievers of his ilk multi-year deals.
Guest attgig Guests Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 this diverges completely from their stance on relievers for the past few years.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Sounds like a winner for the parody tournament though.Schoeneweis, SchoeneweisEvery evening you greet me....
Guest sharpie Guests Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 I take those sort of reports with a grain of salt. Weren't we supposed to have locked up Alou for two guaranteed years? He's been linked to the Yankees most of the winter.
Farmer Ted Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 He's a former starter...hmmmmJersey kid that went to Duke. Local and smart.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 I'm suspicious of guys who wear No. 60.And with that ugly font Toronto went to, his name barely fit on the back of his jersey. Hmmmm
Sandgnat Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 3 year deal for a LOOGY? Righties take him deep every 21 AB's. I don't see how this makes sense unless it is a prelude to another move.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 ]He's a former starter...hmmmm end that thought now, he was TERRIBLE as a starter and hasn't been one in 2 or 3 years. If the Mets want to convert a reliever to start they should talk to Aaron Heilman instead of giving 3 years to Schoenweiss.
RealityChuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 This is SOP: sign a bunch of relievers and sort them out in spring training. Terrible? Maybe. But it's better to have extra arms in camp than to have too few.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 But a 3-year deal?!? That's not SOP. That's... POS!!!Don't get it.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2007 Author Posted January 10, 2007 More from espn:Schoeneweis and the Mets reached a preliminary agreement on a $10.8 million, three-year contract. The deal is pending a physical, three people familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. All three spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract had not yet been finalized.WOW!That's more than they balked at with Bradford AND it'll cost draft pick compensation (Schoenweiss is Type B FA)I don't get this one at all.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 yeah, really stupid. i wouldnt care if they gave a bunch of relievers spring training invites but 3 year deals to guys like this doesnt look good
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 Scott Schoeneweis would be the Mets second Jewish player, perhaps the first time they've been a two-Jew team. All they need is a booger-eating moron. Mota maybe? He's from Long Branch, New Jersey, and his college career included Tommy John surgery after an elbow blowout and a bout with testicular cancer, which he supposedly beat while staying intact. Despite these setbacks (or maybe thanks to them), he graduated from Duke with his class and holds a history degree. In a strange ceremony before dozens of rabid baseball fans here, B'Nai Brith of Canada presents an award for Schoenweiss's generous volunteer work. Accepting the award is... Corey Koskie?Married, but I can't find the wife's name.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 This is dragging its feet. The Mets site says nothing of this. But Wikipedia already describes him as a player for the New York Mets.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 He may or may not be better than Feliciano. I could see a one-year deal for the sake of depth, but that contract looks silly.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 The Mets also have not announced the Duaner Sanchez deal. Maybe Jay is on vacation.I wouldn't be surprised to see another shoe drop here. Feliciano, Heilman and Milledge for...
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 I can't find his wife's name, but I sure have found out that his agent's name is Boras.I guess that what makes him attractive is the versatility. He's an effective LOOGy, but he can do long releif and start as well. He was excellent down the stretch with the Reds last year.Part of this seems to be Omar's reaction to the market. If his like are costing four million a year this off-season, he may be afraid that they'll be 4.5 and 5 in the next two years, so he's "saving" money by locking him up a little. The hard part of that logic is believing that he will be his like for the next three years.I realize he adds Oliverian redundacy in the pen, where Minaya does not intend to get caught with his pants down during a pennant run, but I'd reather see some redundancy that comes in the form of a power-hitting firstbaseman/outfielder on the bench. The thing about LOOGys, though, is that they're dealable.I wonder how Schoeneweis (correct spellling, get used to it) feels about throwing to Paul Lo Duca or having Cliff Floyd in the outfield.

seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 Don't forget about Pedro Martinewitz and Jose Reyestein.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 As much as Scotty's versatility defines his usefulness, it's worth looking at this deal --- should it go over as reported --- as a potential precursor. We only found out later how the Xavier Nady deal was a precursor for the Carlos Delgado acquisition, as the Mets were honing in on both Delgado and Manny Ramirez, and so set themsleves up by getting a guy who could play either corner outfield or firstbase.Schoeneweis can step in the role of another reliever who may be included in a trade or moved into the rotation. That suggests Heilman, but I don't think he's going to be moved until Sanchez is re-established as healthy and/or Mota is returned. But maybe they're looking ahead to then, setting up chips for an in-season move, I don't know.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 I wonder if Minaya, Randolph, or Peterson saw something in his mechanics in Cincinnati that changed from when he was in Toronto, suggesting that the huge difference in performance might not be as flukey as it looks. That would affect his value, to be sure, but the Reds would have known that better than anybody and didn't tie him down. I guess we'll see if they spotted something along those lines.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 He would be the first Met to wear No. 60.Just wrong.
Guest cleonjones11 Guests Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 I would think he will start. He was a decent crafty lefty in anaheim. It also tells me a trade is on the the way and only God knows what that might be..
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2007 Author Posted January 12, 2007 Not a good review of the Schoenweis signing - basically saying the same thing that many of us here have; what's so special about this guy that required a 3-year, near $11mil deal on a team that already has 2 LH relievers?
