Reminds me of one of my favorite lines from one of my favorite movies--"Quiz Show". This is a New York congressman addressing (then) Professor Charles Van Doren who has just been lauded by an investigating committee for admitting that he participated in the rigging of a popular TV game show. (Would anyone even care if this happened today?)

i think it is possible that you can separate out the commission of a bad act from the admission to a bad act, and applaud the latter while still disparage the former.

also, i think that mike and mike' stance is overblown in the above quote. they did amply caveat their applause by stating that it was relative to the actions of others who so easily shrugged off the hat of responsibility.

if you're gonna do something wrong, at least wear the hat of responsibility.

taking responsibility for your bad actions is worthy of commendation. not as much as if you don't do bad things, but certainly moreso than if you don't take responsibility for those bad actions.

and i think that is where mike & mike were going.

The phrase "taking responsibility" is by far one of the most ill-used phrases in thew world.

Mota didn't really take responsibility for anything. Saying "I admit what I did was wrong" after being caught out means nothing. He didn't take responsibility, it was already on him.

The phrase taking responsibility is meant more for someone who steps up and takes the blame when he didn't have to. As in, if a committee of people is blamed for something, and the most/only guilty party shoulders more/all of the blame when it could've been spread around. That's taking responsibility.
Or if somebody gets hurt through some accident that was a result of your short-sightedness...where you can get away without anyone knowing...and you step forward and pay his bills or drive him to the hospital or whatever. That's taking responsbility.

When you are known to be at fault, you can't "take responsibility." You're already responsible. What Mota did is not taking responsibilty. It's stating something we already knew by virtue of the test he failed.

Edit: To clarify, I'm not going to condemn him any MORE for saying "I knowingly took illegal substances and did something stupid." But it doesn't remove one iota of blame/fault that I place on him.
