Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2006 Posted September 9, 2006 Marlins up 3-2 over the Phillies in the bottom of the eighth. Phillies have a runner on third with one out and Randall Simon at the plate.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2006 Author Posted September 9, 2006 Meanwhile the Braves attempt to stave off elimination (for now) with a 5-3 lead over the Cubs in the 6th.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2006 Author Posted September 9, 2006 Borowski strikes out two batters to preserve the lead for the Fish.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2006 Author Posted September 9, 2006 A Marlins win brings them a .500 record and 2 games back in the WC behind San Diego (1 behind the Phillies). Marlins go down 1-2-3 in the 8th. Phillies up for one last gasp.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2006 Author Posted September 9, 2006 I should add that a Marlins win brings the Mets magic number to 5, but you already knew that.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2006 Author Posted September 9, 2006 Two on with one out for Conine after the Fish walk Howard.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2006 Author Posted September 9, 2006 Conine singles in Victorino. Tie game! Go Phillies!
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2006 Author Posted September 9, 2006 Phillies leave the bases loaded and the score remains 3-3 going into the bottom of the 9th.
dinosaur jesus Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2006 Posted September 9, 2006 The Marlins walked Howard intentionally with the tying run on first and one out. He didn't beat them with a home run, of course, but I'd say that was a silly move, and they paid for it.

dinosaur jesus Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2006 Posted September 9, 2006 I'm pretty sure that hard-throwing Marlins reliever Chris Resop, who just scraped through the top of the tenth, is on the run from the law or a vengeful ex-girlfriend--Resop can't possibly be a real name. Notice that it's Poser backwards.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2006 Posted September 9, 2006 You're probably right, DJ. And if you're on the lam, there's no better place to hide than in a Marlins uniform... you don't have any fans to worry about people noticing you.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2006 Author Posted September 9, 2006 Marlins win! Good ballgame.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2006 Author Posted September 9, 2006 The Braves win too, so their tragic number remains 2.
Guest old original jb Guests Posted September 9, 2006 Posted September 9, 2006 Does anyone have special plans for what do do when the Braves' elimination occurs?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 I'm making love to my pillow. Just like the last time the Mets won the division.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 I'm gonna go around shouting and dressed up like this guy:

Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 Did the Marlins really intentionally walk Ryan Howard in the 9th with the tying run on first base? (I was only half paying attention.)Howard's dangerous, but moving the tying run into scoring position and putting the go-ahead run on first is dangerous too.
dinosaur jesus Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 They did, and the next man, Conine, drove in the tying run. Then they did it again in the tenth, with men on first and second and two out. That one made more sense to me, since either way a base hit would score a run, and Howard was a lot more likely to get one than Conine. But I see this as an overreaction to a real threat--they're so scared when Howard comes up that they probably hide their kids in the basement and turn on the air raid siren.
