Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 1. Can someone post the formulae for magic numbers/elimination numbers?2. Can we do this for the Mets other NL East rivals too? It would nice to see them all dropping away over the next 6 weeks.
Guest KC Guests Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Not sure we need formulae - eek, I said formulae ...Any combo of Mets' wins and whoevers' non-wins I think works just fine.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Philadelphia is at 32. Florida is also at 30. Washington is at 26.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 This really hasn't sunk in to me yet. Either that or I don't care as much as I used to.We haven't won an East title in 18 freaking years. This is fun.

I don't know how the rest of you figure out the Mets magic number and the elimination numbers for the rest of the team. Maybe formulae is not the right word. Just tell me how you do it.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Yancy explained it nicely in the Standings thread. You find the maximum number of wins that a team can get this year (162 minus losses), and the magic number is the number of wins the Mets would need to surpass that maximum.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Example:Mets 70-45Braves 55-60Maximum number of wins the Braves can get = 162 - 60 = 102Number of wins the Mets need to surpass that = 103 - 70 = 33
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Or just take the numbers I posted above, and subtract one for every Met win or a loss by the given team
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 The lowest "tragic number" for being eliminated from a division belongs - not surprisingly - to the Royals.Their Max wins = 85; Tigers need just 10 more for 86Elimination from the WC is a bit tougher to figure because ALL the teams in front of you can't lose ALL their games since, in a number of cases, they're playing each other. But, suffice to say, the Royals aren't going to the post-season this year.Elimination from the NL WC will be real tough to figure in advance because there's such a log-jam and so many contender-v-contender match-ups since the Pirates, Cubs, Nats and (maybe) Giants are the only ones who don't still have a punchers chance at it.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 The formula works the same though.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Dublin is to Dubliners a dear auld dirty town It`s getting dearer every year and hard to earn a pound And as for the Liffey that gash through the city,It`s thicker than treacle or chalk It`ll soon be so grim that instead of a swimThey`ll be holding the Liffey walkThe first couplet there has changed since that song was written. Maybe the last four lines have hope also.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 Sweet. They make a set with a Vic Wertz swining some 400+ feet away?
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 I had some Aurora models as a kid. They made a series of classic monsters, like Phantom of the Opera and Dracula.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 FYI, the number for Braves Postseason elimination is sitting at 34
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 It occurs to me that it's entirely possible the Mets may officially end the Braves divisional championship streak while the Braves are in town in two weeks. That would be delicious.
