Three offensive All-Stars (23, 23, and 29) wrapped up for five-seven years is a lot to look forward to.

That's terrific!

And it eats up two (maybe three) years of free agency.

]Mets extend Wright...

Why, they didn't think he was tall enough??

I'm a bit surprised at the timing and size of the deal, but certainly not unhappy.

]I'm really starting to like how this organization does things. Except for the Nady trade.

The one that got him here or the one that sent him away?
Or both?

I get tired of the numbers on these things, but six years at less than ten
per is probably gonna be a bargain for the Mets in the long run. No?

Yup ®.

From the Reyes thread:

]
if the mets were to offer him the security of a 4 year deal at say 22 million over 4 does he reject it?

Seems he would.

]Daily News says this morning that no long-term discussions have been held with Wright. He and his agent would be receptive, but Mets says nothing's planned yet, since Wright is still a year away from arbitration.

Rubin, you've been traded to Pittsburgh for relief pitching.

NEW YORK -- For years, and even when he was a primary part of their present, the Mets have referred to David Wright as part of the future. And now they have put their money where the mouth is and made it official. The club announced Sunday it had invested another $55 million in its future, that it had signed the face of the organization to a contract that could -- and almost certainly will -- keep Wright him in Mets colors through the 2012 season.
The announcement was made at Shea Stadium before the Mets played the Phillies, a day after Wright's diving play denied the Phillies a run and produced the final out of a one-run victory and four days after the club "locked up" the other half of the left side of its infield, Jose Reyes, for four years and $23.25 million.

The contract provides for a $1.5 million signing bonus, salaries of $1 million next year, $5 million in 2008, $7.5 million in 2009, $10 million in 2010, $14 million in 2011 and $15 million in 2012. If the Mets exercise their option for 2013, the All-Star third baseman will earn $16 million. If they don't, he will receive $1 million.

Full agreement was struck at 4:15 p.m. ET Sunday after Reyes-speed negotiations that began in earnest on Wednesday. In a conversation before the trading deadline last Monday, Wright's representatives, Sam and Seth Levinson, and the Mets had agreed to limit the time spent negotiating so as not to have the efforts become a distraction to Wright.

"We just wanted to get it done by the end of the weekend," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said.

Wright called the time spent "exciting" and the contract "humbling." He said he wasn't worried about getting a deal done.

"I've always wanted to be a life-long Met," Wright said. "I made that clear. This is a big step in that direction."

Wright gets security and a long term commitment from the Mets. He's happy and the Mets fans should be ecstatic, so it's a great deal for all involved.

The Mets have locked up a solid offensive core (Beltran, Reyes, Wright) for several years to come. The future just keeps looking better for the Mets organization.

I think I'm developing a man crush for Omar.

Except that, on his own, Wright was prolly not going to make more than 500K next year so you gotta look at this stuff as an average. He's getting more now in exchange for the security he's not yet in position to demand and possibly less later on because he's giving up the right to auction himself for 2 more (or possibly 3) years.
It could be a bargain for the team in the back years (assuming normal progression) plus they know exactly what the budgeted numbers are for their two young guns for the foreseeable future.

Nothng not to like about this deal, it's refreshing to see to home grown players commit to deals that seems good for both sides...and from Newsday...

]

Wright will donate $1.5 million to the Mets Foundation during the contract.

what's not to like about Wright?

Well, at least we know there won't be an "I'm not gay" press conference in his future...

You know what I was thinking about this morning? The huge ovation he's going to get when he's introduced in the starting lineup at the 2012 All Star Game at the new Bob Murphy Stadium.

So are you jealous? Beer and women are two of my favorite things. It's nice that Wright shares my interests.

Jealous? Nah. I was just referencing this sentiment.

While I never liked beer, girls can be rather appealing. I wouldn't mind being a 23-year-old single millionaire.

Maybe I am jealous.

]"As long as the teams are competitive, it drives sales right through the roof," crowed John Camilleri, general manager for the Yankees and Mets Clubhouse stores.

Camilleri said Derek Jeter jerseys were the hottest sellers for 10 years but the Yankee shortstop has been surpassed in popularity by Mets heartthrob third baseman David Wright.

Mets strike gold with Wright, Reyes

By GUY CURTRIGHT
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 08/06/06

Fleet shortstop Jose Reyes was rewarded with a big long-term contract. The New York Mets will try to do the same with slugging third baseman David Wright.

Rarely has a team broken in such a dynamic young left side of the infield. When you have a 23-year-old pair like Reyes and Wright, you want to make sure they stay around for a long, long time.

Mention the Mets' twosome and Braves broadcaster Don Sutton thinks of Robin Yount and Paul Molitor, who came up to Milwaukee when the right-hander was pitching for the Brewers.

"You can't get a better combination than that. They are both in the Hall of Fame," said Sutton, who is in Cooperstown with them.

"But Wright and Reyes are going to be special players. They are pretty darn good right now."

How special are the Mets youngsters? They were the first infield teammates 23 or younger ever to be named to start an All-Star Game.

Reyes couldn't play because of a finger laceration, but that is the only thing that has stopped him this season. He went into the weekend leading the majors with 44 stolen bases and 13 triples while hitting .291.

Wright has the power to balance Reyes' speed. A future team leader and an MVP candidate this year, Wright was hitting .309 with 22 homers and 81 RBIs.

"Both of them are stars," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "Getting two of them like that together, that's about as good as it's ever going to get. You don't see guys like that too often.

"Wright gets to a lot of balls. He makes errors now, but he's going to be a premier defensive guy. And he's going to hit 30 homers every year of his life. Reyes plays a great short and he's going to steal you 50 or 60 bases and hit .300."

The pair has played so well that some Mets fans think that they are better than the Yankees' twosome of shortstop Derek Jeter and third baseman Alex Rodriguez.

That might be a stretch, but you certainly can't argue that the Mets are getting more for their money right now.

"We're just having fun and enjoying the ride," Wright said. "This isn't the time for comparisons. We're just getting started."

I need the source of this quote immediately. Thanks.

edit -- nevermind -- found it. This'll be the first year since 1988 the Mets draw more than 3 mills. They reached that figure 12 years before the MFYs did.

Have I told you how much I hate "replica" Yankee t-shirts --- but especially "authentic-looking" jerseys, that have the fave player's name on the back, rendering it actually less than authentic? I think I have. Haven't I?

Well, I hate that.
