Re-Signed for One Year, $3 MillionRemoved from Projected Roster

Valentin

Gotay
Mets.com is finally confirming the Valentin re-uppage.

I guess this is worse news for Gotay than Hernandez roster-wise. Gotay has two advantages, in that he's out of options and at least hit a little in 2004, which is more than Hernandez ever did. But Willie seems to like defensive strength up the middle, and Hernandez plays shortstop while Gotay seems to be exclusively tacked to second.

It's probably close to 50/50 at this point.

Padilla

This trade fleshes out an outfield that debateably only had four major-league ready bats this offseason. Things are shaping out nicely early in the offseason.

Padilla is the most experienced and successful of those in line to grab the bullpen spot that opens, assuming he's healthy. But since this leaves only two lefties in the pen, it may be an opportunity for the likes of Blake McGinley, currently bringing it for the Mesa Solar Sox.

This is not what I imagined Easley looked like.

Damian was born on Corduroy Day in 1969.

Notice how Adkins inherited Tyler Yates's beard?

One would think that with the Alou signing, the Mets position player roster is set for 2007.

Presumably the only question would be whether Milledge or Johnson will be on the opening day roster (or both, if they go with 11 pitchers).

]In other moves, the Mets also claimed right-hander Jason Standridge off waivers from Cincinnati and purchased the contract of outfielder Carlos Gomez from Double-A Binghamton.

Most likely. I could still see making a move for a righty bat who could play second, but I'm not sure how room would be made.

I don't see going with less than 12, or finding enough playing time for both Milledge and Johnson. It will be interesting to see who the Mets decide will get part-time play here and who gets full-time play in AAA.

So, when you heard about this deal, acquiring Bostick, what did you think about

(1) Lyman Bostock?
(2) Keith Bostic?
(3) Barry Bostwick?
(4) Bostich Staplers?
(5) Bialystock & Bloom?

A few more of those classic fly-aways, Vargas will be sporting a full Apodaca.

I'm certain I read that somewhere.

So, you think the Mets have the stomache to cut down to 11 pitchers?

Posted

no, but i'm hoping they do, because I'd rather have another LH bat on the bench other than Chavez, who'll be used alot for defense and as a spot starter, than a 12th pitcher, like Standridge or Adkins, who'll hardly ever pitch meaningful innings.

speaking of which, i'm hoping we can do better than Gotay in that slot. Its important to have a bat on the bench for late inning duty against good RHed setup guys and closers.

Posted

either milledge or johnson will get farmed out. frankly, i'm hopint its milledge, because i'd like to see him tear up AAA and come back up when ALou (inevitably) goes down, rather than just have him sit on the Mets bench.

Also, LoDuca will hit second. Willie is obviously enamored of this. Alou will probably hit 6th or 7th depending on lefty/righty.

My more visually enhanced presentation also farms out Milledge for the time bieng, and I try to stay away from wishful thinking.

If you'd rather have a batsman on your bench than an extra infielder or a twelfth pitcher, Abreu will probably get a look. It'd help his case enormously, however, if it could be determined that he can fake it in left here and there.

Wasn't this theory completely disproven by 2006? The Mets carried 12 relievers for the entire season save the first week. There were few unimportant innings, especially with a starting rotation that didn't go deep into games. Granted, Trachsel and Pedro won't be around next year but be it Zitor or Glavine or someone else to go with Maine, El Duque et al. they're still not exactly going to have a ton of innings-eaters in that rotation. I'd think that 12th pitcher is going to be pretty valuable, and his innings are going to be meaningful.

I think that bat's going to be Green (when a lefty starts) and Chavez otherwise. That seems pretty capable.

Since you have both Chavez and Green available for late pinch hitting duty when a lefty starts against the Mets, who do you expect to see starting in right field, Milledge? I doubt that there will be a Milledge/Green platoon unless Green really struggles and Milledge gets red hot. I doubt we'll see such a scenario on a regular basis.

Why do I have this feeling that Steve Traschell may be on the team next year? Looking at some of the price VS performance contracts recently given out, he could be as good as any of the non-top tier pitchers available.

I think Trachsel signed his one way ticket out of New York when he walked off the mound in St. Louis.

There was a lot of transaction action this week. Fortunately the Projected 2007 25-Man Roster Thread was there to comer it.

I've included the additional guys on the 40-Man Roster at the bottom. I count three spots available, and there'll be a fourth when Pedro returns to the 60-Day DL. But I suppose they can't warehouse him there during the Rule V draft in order to use another spot to protect a body.

If Green is sitting against a lefty, it'd be either Chavez or Johnson starting. Therefore Green would be the lefty off the bench.

If Green starts, then Chavez can be the lefty off the bench.

I didn't factor Milledge into my analysis, and certainly not as a platoon player. I suspect Green will start against at least 35-50% of lefties.

I see Easley as more of the right field platoon against lefty starters.

For now.

I guess I'll leave Burgos off the projected roster for now as there's nobody currently in the bullpen with options. (Indeed, only two guys on the roster have them.) It's certainly possible that Padilla could clear waivers and open in the minors, though, or even get a re-hab assignment.
