Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 I'm not usually one who feels the need to attend every "event" game - but I decided on the afternoon of that game that I had to be there that night. So I called a connection and got a last minute ticket and rushed to the stadium in time for the game but too late to meet a large bunch of the (old) forum who were gathering prior to game time - although I did manage to catch up with Dickshot, Sponge/Farmer Ted, KC, and even meet Ambler (oldies know who I'm talking about) for the first and only time as he had flown in from California for the game.What I remember from that night:- Being in field level seats and the only thing I could hear during the pre-game 'moment of silence' were the flag-ropes on the top of the stadium flapping in the wind four decks above me. I had never heard 40K people that quiet before ... the silence was deafening.- Thinking that - in Shea Stadium of all places - the stocky middle-aged guy walking up the aisle towards me must get kidded that he looks like Ron Swoboda a lot. As he came closer and eventually turned into my row and plopped down in the seat next to me I realized ... it WAS Ron Swoboda!!- I've never been a big Liza fan but she was at her brassy/sassy best and the rousing 'New York, New York' was just what was needed at that point after all the solemn activities earlier. Yeah we were mourning - but we're still here!- Thinking that the result of the game was secondary to everything else and in a way it was enough that we were just playing ... except that after all the problems during that season we had managed to work our way back into the fringes of a pennant race and godammit we needed this fucking game!! So by the later innings the fact that we were playing again suddenly wasn't enough anymore!- That there was a whole lot of emotion riding on the big guy's (nod to Fran) HR. I'm sure most will tell you that they knew it was gone as soon as he hit it but I wasn't - and with Andruw out there I don't even consider it a hit until I see it bounce at least twice.

There were times when I didn't know whether there'd be baseball again so the need to hear that game was strong.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 One of my personal favorite posts ever came from this one (lost in the EZ Crash but still available on a floppy disc I can't read anymore).It was called "Did Piazza Touch Third Base?" and described my reaction to the HR -- jumping up and down, then landing on a beer bottle in the aisle, nearly falling down the stairs but righting myself only to step on the same bottle a second time and wind up sprawled horizonally across three of those hard metal box edges at the waists of people I didn't know but who were happy to have me there.I remember the long line to get in, being genuinely moved at the ribbon in the skyline atop the scoreboard, and thinking what did Jay Payton think mnow that Liza was singing with her arm around him, probably "Get me the F outta here!!!!"
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 The game was taking place at the same time as the America: Tribue to Heroes telethon (was broadcast simultaneously on CBS, ABC, NBC and FOX), which had a lot of good artists that I wanted to see (Bruce, Neil Young, Vedder, Petty, et al.), so I was flipping between the game and the telethon. Surreal, certainly, to go between the songs and the Mets, back in New York.Game was carried nationally (on ESPN?) so seeing it on SNY was the first time I got to hear Howie broadcasting it.

I wasn't at that game, but the only thing I experienced that might be comparable to that silence was on my college campus after it was announced that John Kennedy had been shot.Hearing the flag ropes flapping - an all-time great word picture.
