Glavine off ASG Roster

Its official, Chris Capuano of the Brewers will go on the official roster instead of Glavine.

Bet you someone about Glavine (i.e. Randolph) probably bitched to Garner about having an important starter in the game.

I recall Davey Johnson imploring that Dick Williams NOT use Doc Gooden in the 1985 game despite Gooden's prolific start

Glavine will probably still make the trip and doff the cap but will not be used in the game

I don't know about bitching. Probably more like Glavine's a 40-year old guy and pitching on Sunday would make him unavailable to throw on Tuesday, so fill his spot. Capuano's been great and deserves it. Good for him.

Okay, bitch might be too strong, but too many times these are situations where the manager (or whomever) tries to controll things for their favor

Whats being under reported in ManRam's being out of the ASG is that it was TERRY FRANCONA who campaigned for him not being at the game, not ManRam himself

Sure sometimes it'll be the player himself, like Pedro taking his ASG selection as a chance to take an extended vacation, but most of the time the blame lies soley with the organization the player plays for

Essentailly they are saying how can Glavine just "back out" and also wondering why Griffey and Bonds aren't there.

Hell this afternoon one of their hosts made a case that Clemens deserves to be there over Brian Fuentes!

Essentially dissapointment that the best players aren't there leaving a bunch of "no-names" going because "everyone needs to be represented"

I fail to see the issue. Starting pitchers who pitch on Sunday nearly always opt out of the All-Star Game. I doubt the AS manager is ever upset, since they wouldn't be available to pitch.

What the hell! Glavine should go ahead and pitch. The all star game is likely going to be the most compelling game for the Mets (at least for a � of the roster) until October.

Combo of both. Managers and players do beg out when it comes to their pitchers. Davey Johnson in his own book said he hated having his pitchers selected to an All Star Game (funny thing of course is that he took Sid Fernandez in 1987)

Bitch is probably too strong for this case, but it is a fact of life in today's sports

And the media does blow it all out of porportion when it comes to when players beg out even if they don't have a legit injury, basically acting as if its giving all of the fans a big FU despite the fact that the game has barely enough interest to make the arguments a strong one

Hell even fans of the teams would prefer that their guys (specifically starting pitchers) sat out. Hell, don't you think part of the Phillies collapse last year was due to Abreu messing up his swing in order to win that HR contest? Probably not, but Abreu was ice cold the last 3 months of the year and the Phils missed the playoffs.

Both assertions are not contradictory. I was throwing out there my opinion about how Glavine came to be removed from the roster and stated later that the media blows stuff like that out of proportion

First I said, I'd bet Glavine and/or someone high in the Met Food chain, most likely Randolph probably campaigned for this, this wasn't something that was hatched on Sunday, that this probably was in the works since Glavine was picked.

Which is their right to do so, many fans would agree with the assertion that their best, and healthy pitcher should sit out the All Star Game, especially considering he is 40 and we are in first place of the division, and it actually would be better if a younger guy like Capuano made it for the first time instead.

I just threw it out there, saying they bitched was probably over the top, no one should force anyone to go to an All Star game if they don't want to, no matter what the reason.

Therefore, as I said later the media blows these things up (usually when its someone like Pedro who doesn't go due to "mysterious" circumstances, especially when not on the actual DL) and its one of their agruments about how the ASG should be fixed and one of their self-fufilling prophesey about how the game has dwindled in interest.

In other words its not a big deal that Glavine isn't going, the media makes mountains out of these type of things,

I'm sure there are examples, but they must be on a local level, i.e. LA newspaper writers saying Sutton and Lasorda are pieces of crud for pitching Sutton on Sunday, therefore leaving him unavailable to pitch in the Tuesday All Star Game. But since its not a big deal, the issue blows over and is forgotten in the next news cycle
