Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Twenty Years ago Today:The Mets beat the Cubbies 4-2, behind a complete-game by broadcaster Ron Darling. George Foster hit his 11th homerun and it was Corey Green's first game.Despite all of our memories associating Howard Johnson and Kevin Mitchell appearances at shortstop with Dwight Gooden and Sid Fernandez starts (which I'm sure remains generally true), apparently he backed Darling on this day.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 It's always a little odd to see a Met from a different era on the opposing team's side of the box score. In this case it's 99er Shawon Dunston.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Twenty years ago today, the Mets lost a ten-inning jobbie to the Expos. Kevin Mitchell, batting eighth despite his .342 batting average, started his second straight game at shortstop. It was an error by Mitchell to open the third that started a two-runn rally, which decapitated an otherwise strong effort by Dwight Gooden. It was Pay-the-Piper day at Shea, as the Gary Carter trade jumped all over the Mets. OK, Floyd Youmans had a modest day on the mound, but the Carter package otherwise turned into Murderer's Row, as Youmans, Hubie Brooks, Mike Fitzgerald, and Herm Winnngham combined to go 7-15, and twice reached on Mets miscues. Carter himself had only a single in four at-bats, but he caught two of four base stealers (Brooks going 1-2, which was a month of running for him as a Met) with Gooden on the mound.Twenty years ago today, the Mets lost a ten-inning jobbie to the Expos. MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Great job.My main impression was that even to this day, my stomach is much more comfortable when I see "lf" next to Kevin Mitchell's name than when I see "ss".Later
HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I remember this game fondly, but two things that had escaped me were the HoJo reaching on passed ball, but then cut down on DP in the 9th, and that the winning rally was started by none other than Ed Hearn.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 A lot of messed up plays. HoJo reaching by kicking the ball must've burned Rose's butt. Stillwell beating the throw but oversliding second saved the Mets' hide.Supposedly, during the brawl, the entire Reds starting rotation wanted to pop Dyksra. He was probably hard to find in a crowd. Did Straw leave the clubhouse for the fight?
Guest Iubitul Guests Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Oh man - I can still see Knight's cross to Davis clearly, and then Carter taking Davis down halfway between 2nd and 3rd....As for Strawberry, I'm not sure if he did, but I wouldn't be surprised....
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 The amazing thing about this thread is that had he not been in the American League at the time, you would eventually turn up a game in which Julio Franco was playing shortstop. 1984 Donruss Card
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 You can go back further than that. Remember, he was a Phillie phirst; but he doesn't appear until the 1983 Topps Traded set.http://imagehost.vendio.com/bin/imageserver.x/00000000/metscape/24034.JPGhttp://imagehost.vendio.com/bin/imageserver.x/00000000/metscape/24035.JPGBad scan, but I LOVE the back of his '06 Topps card, because the print is reeeeeeeeeeeally small. (Which means the print on his '07 is going to be even smaller, and considering he's signed for '07 already, I'm really looking forward to his '08.)

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Well, since Strawberry had been tossed earlier, he may not have counted among the "every Met" set.

I eventually settled for a picture of him with Cleveland (as he was in 1986). Amazing to think he has been around for so long and he is still able to play and contribute to a major league team.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 Pretty sure him, Clemens and Maddux are the only active Major Leaguers from 1986 still going as of now

stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 By the way, of note the Celebratory giveaways at Shea have been as follows:On the 16th of June fans got this Commemorative Coin that kicked off the Dunkin' Donuts promotionJuly 6th saw Steiner Sports and the Mets give away (I think this was the second time, the first was early 1990's as a poster that was seen as a crass move) a photo of the Mookie/Buckner playAnd Sunday (the 23rd) saw this nifty replica of the 1986 revised yearbook be given outAs with the 69 and 73 reprints given out through the years, the differences can not be shown by looking at a picture of the cover. The stock is different and the back cover (as well as the flip of the front cover) is a 2006 advertizment for Sports AuthorityComing Soon...Aug 4th T Shirt day!Aug 5th 1986 Mets Team Photo Day!And on the day of the celebration, Topps is giving out card packs
